Commentary

And when their threat was caused by this, he said - terrifying them with his warning by means of ambiguity; and expressing amazement at them with questioning; informing that they will regret when regret will not benefit them; and their excuses will not avail them -: "So how will their state be; when a calamity befalls them"; meaning: a tremendous punishment; "because of what their own hands have sent forth"; from what we have mentioned; and from other than it.

And when it was necessary for their contradiction to be far off; because lying among the Arabs was severe; he said: "Then they will come to you"; meaning: humbled by that calamity which has softened them; while they are "swearing by Allah"; meaning: the One possessing the attributes of perfection; of majesty; and beauty; not recalling any of His attributes; "If"; meaning: what; "We intended"; meaning: in all our states; and in all our actions; "except good and success"; meaning: that matters be in the best and most appropriate manner; for what we have seen in that which is hidden from others; and they have lied in all of that.
