Commentary
And when the decree was - as understood from the end of the verse; and indicated by the beginning of it; after gathering creation upon His obedience; by the way mentioned -: "So whoever refuses that; he is not a believer"; it was indicated by His saying - marveling; addressing the most complete of creation; whom Allah defined as the hypocrites in the tone of the saying -: "Did you not see"; and He pointed to their distance from His noble presence; by His saying: "to those who"; and to their lying; and the continuity of their hypocrisy; by His saying: "they claim that they have believed"; meaning: they have established this truth and placed it in themselves; "by what has been revealed to you"; and it indicated that this claiming hypocrite was from the people of the Book; before claiming Islam; by His saying: "and they"; meaning: and they claim that they have believed in what "was revealed before you"; meaning: from the Torah; and the Gospel; Al-Asbahani said: and the claim is not used - meaning: the claim - in most cases - except in a saying that is not realized; it is said: "So-and-so claimed"; if there is doubt about it; so his lying or truthfulness is not known; and the intended meaning is that these people said a saying that is, for one who does not know the inner realities, worthy of being doubted; as evidenced by the fact that they; "want to refer"; meaning: they and your debtors; "to the tyrant"; meaning: to the falsehood that is characterized by falsehood; "and indeed"; meaning: while they have "been commanded"; by the one who has the command; "to disbelieve in it"; in all that has been revealed from your Book; and what preceded it; and whenever they referred to it, they were believers in it; disbelievers in Allah; and this is the meaning of His saying: "and the devil wants"; by their wanting that reference; "to lead them astray"; meaning: by referring to it; "a far astray"; such that they cannot return to guidance with it; and this verse is the reason for naming Umar - may Allah be pleased with him - as "the one who distinguishes"; for striking the neck of a hypocrite who was not pleased with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - in a story mentioned by Al-Thaalabi; from the narration of Al-Kalbi; from Abu Salih; from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with them both.
