59O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Then, if you quarrel about something, revert it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is good, and the best at the end.

Commentary

And when He commanded - glorified and exalted is He - with justice; and encouraged it; and warned against abandoning it; He commanded obedience to those appointed for that; who carry them to be gentle with them; and to have compassion for them; He said: ﴿O you who have believed﴾; meaning: acknowledge faith; and began with what is the mainstay in urging that; He said: ﴿Obey﴾; meaning: in accordance with the command, affirming your claim of faith; ﴿Allah﴾; meaning: in what He has commanded you in His Book; being mindful of what He has of the best names; and the greatness of the rank of His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, by reiterating the worker; He said: ﴿And obey the Messenger﴾; in what he has defined for you in his Sunnah from Allah; and what he has clarified from His Book; because the position of Prophethood necessitates that; and for this reason, He expressed it this way; without mentioning the Prophet; ﴿And those in authority among you﴾; meaning: the rulers; for their obedience - in what is not disobedience - is as indicated by the lack of reiteration of the worker - from the obedience to the Messenger of Allah, blessings and peace be upon him; and his obedience is from the obedience to Allah - the Mighty and Majestic -; and the scholars are also from those in authority; and they are the workers; for they command by the command of Allah and His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him.

And when this ruling clarified the three fundamentals; it followed it with analogy; so it caused what is estimated: "This is in the clear matters from the Book and the Sunnah; and which the consensus has occurred upon"; His saying: ﴿So if you disagree over something﴾; meaning: to clothe it; if your opinions differ regarding it; ﴿Then return it to Allah﴾; meaning: the All-Encompassing in knowledge; and ability; by humbling yourselves before Him; with what He has legislated for you of supplication and worship; so that He may open for you what has been closed of it; and guide you to the truth of it; ﴿and the Messenger﴾ [An-Nisa: 69]; meaning: the one who has completed the message; by searching for the traces of his message; from a text in that specifically; or from a basis of analogy; and the verse indicates the arrangement of the four fundamentals; as it is in it; and on the invalidation of what is besides it; and it is known from His (the Exalted) singling out; and the gathering of the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, with the leaders of his nation; that the etiquette is the oneness of Allah; even in merely mentioning Him; and He emphasized the statement for the claim of obedience by His saying: ﴿If you truly believe﴾; meaning: constantly upon faith; by renewing it at every moment; ﴿in Allah﴾; meaning: the Greatest King; who has no equal; ﴿and the Last Day﴾; which urges obedience; and prevents disobedience; then it indicated the greatness of this matter; and its vast benefit; by His saying - specifying His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him: ﴿That﴾; meaning: the high-ranking matter; ﴿is better﴾; meaning: and other than it is evil; ﴿and has the best outcome﴾; meaning: in consequence; or (it is) a return; and a return from your return to what the sound intellect necessitates without consideration of the traces of the message from the Book and the Sunnah; for indeed in the rulings are matters that the intellect does not independently grasp; except with the assistance of the Shari'ah; Al-Bukhari narrated; in the Tafsir; from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with both of them -; he said: "This verse was revealed: 'Obey Allah' regarding Abdullah ibn Hudhafah ibn Qais ibn Adiy; when the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, sent him in a military expedition; meaning, he commanded them to enter the fire.
