Commentary
And when the command for goodness and justice towards women, orphans, in inheritance and otherwise, and in other matters of blood, wealth, words, and actions was mentioned in this surah; and the mention of the betrayal of the People of the Book; and what punishment He has made lawful for them because of that; and the mention that He has granted this nation the kingship that necessitates judgment; and He has given them wisdom after their ignorance and weakness; He turned to them with the sweetness of His address; after He promised them to comply with His command from His generous reward; with what He concluded with the shade promised for justice; in the hadith: "Seven will be shaded by Allah in His shade"; He said: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has the attributes of perfection; ﴿commands you﴾; meaning: O nation; ﴿to fulfill trusts to whom they are due﴾; meaning: without any betrayal; as the People of the Book did in concealing what they have; and informing about other than it; and "trust" is everything that is due to others from you.
And when He commanded what is due to a person regarding himself; He commanded what is due to him in dealing with others; and He affirmed for them what they did not seek from the matter of kingship; by His saying - with the tool of cutting; connecting two things to two things -: ﴿And when you judge﴾; and He clarified the generality of their kingship over all nations; by His saying: ﴿between people﴾; and He clarified what is commanded by saying: ﴿that you judge with justice﴾; meaning: equality; by ordering whoever has a right upon him to fulfill it to whom it is due; for that is among the greatest righteous deeds that necessitate a good resting place in the shaded shade; both al-Bukhari and others narrated from Abu Hurairah - may Allah be pleased with him - that the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, said: "Seven will be shaded by Allah in His shade on a day when there is no shade except His shade: a just ruler..."; the hadith.
And when He informed them of His command, He increased their desire by saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; also expressing with the greatest name; ﴿what a good﴾; meaning: what a great thing; ﴿He advises you with﴾; and He urged them to hasten to good compliance; by His saying: ﴿Indeed, Allah﴾; repeating this noble name; so that they strive to ascend in the purity of morals to a level that no one else has reached; and when the observer in trusts must have someone with hearing and knowledge; He said: ﴿was﴾; meaning: and has always been; and continues to be; ﴿Hearing﴾; meaning: fully hearing all that they say; in response to His command; and otherwise; ﴿Seeing﴾; meaning: fully seeing; and knowledge of all that they do in that; and otherwise; from compliance and others.
