54Or, is it that they are jealous of people over what Allah has given them of His bounty, while We have given to the House of Ibrāhīm the Book and the wisdom, and We have given to them a great kingdom?

Commentary

﴿Am﴾; that is: they have no share of the kingdom; rather, their humiliation is inevitable; and their degradation is always present; they ﴿yahsuduna an-nasa﴾; that is: Muhammad ﷺ who has gathered all the virtues of all people; from the first ones and the last ones; and has added to them what Allah willed; or the Arabs who have no people (p-303) other than them now; because We have preferred them over the worlds - by wishing for the continuation of their humiliation; just as it has lasted for them; and it indicates the end of their envy by the tool of superiority; in His saying: ﴿‘ala ma atahum Allah﴾; that is: by what He has of the attributes of perfection; ﴿min fadlih﴾; they envied them for what they saw of their grandfather's acceptance; and the appearance of their good fortune; and that they are the leaders of the people; and the leaders of the noble and the brave:

Indeed, the lowly ones meet you enviously ∗∗∗ And you will not see for the base of people any envy.

And Allah - glorified and exalted is He - has given them all kinds of kingdom; for it is divided into three categories: a kingdom over both the outward and the inward; and it is for the prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - due to what they have of the utmost generosity; and kindness; and mercy; and compassion; and intercession; and righteousness; and gentleness; each of which is a cause for submission; and that is along with what they have with Allah - glorified and exalted is He - of the completeness of connection; and a kingdom only over the outward; and it is the kingdom of kings; and a kingdom only over the inward; and it is the kingdom of scholars.

And when He condemned them - glorified and exalted is He - first for ignorance; and praising themselves; boasting of what they have not been given; and that is a cause for all deficiencies; and secondly for something greater than that: withholding the truth from its people out of stinginess; and thirdly for something greater than both of them: wishing that no blessing reaches anyone; even if it does not diminish them; they have thus acquired the highest qualities of blame; and the deficiencies lower; and the virtues elevate; this resulted from the expectation of the listener for the elevation of the Arabs; and the continuation of the humiliation of the Jews; and their death from their envy; so He said: ﴿faqad﴾; that is: this has resulted; and it was followed by the fact that We have given them - thus was the original -; but He manifested it for the warning about the description with which they shared in deserving the virtues; so He said: ﴿atayna﴾; that is: by what We have of greatness; ﴿al-Ibrahim﴾; that is: the one whom We informed you in your Book that We swore to him that We would honor his descendants; and guide them; and make his son Isma'il present among all the limits of his brothers; and his hand over all people; and the hand of everyone with him; ﴿al-kitab﴾; that is: the one for which there is no book except it; for what it has of preservation and virtue; by the miracle and the distinction; ﴿wal-hikmah﴾; that is: the prophethood whose fruit is the well-executed work with the precise and well-structured knowledge; ﴿waataynahum﴾; along with that; ﴿mulkan aziman﴾; that is: immense; vast; lasting until the Day of Resurrection;
