And when he was astonished by their lying, he indicated it by his saying: ﴿Did you not see﴾. The original was: 'to them'; but he said - for the purpose of increasing the reprimand, the rebuke, and the informing that their disbelief is obstinacy, due to it being from knowledge -: ﴿to those who﴾. And he expressed it with 'to' to indicate their distance from the noble presences. ﴿They were given a share of the Book﴾; that is: which is the Book in reality, because it is from Allah. ﴿They believe in al-jibt﴾; and it is the idol, the soothsayer, the magician, and that which has no good in it; and everything that was worshipped besides Allah. ﴿and al-taghut﴾; and it is al-Lat, al-Uzza, the soothsayer, the devil, and every head of misguidance; and the idols, and everything that was worshipped besides Allah. All of these meanings are valid to intend here; and they are from what was prohibited in their Book - and its origin and core is transgressing the limit in aggression; and it is one; and it may be plural. He said - glorified and exalted is He -: ﴿Their allies are al-taghut, they bring them out﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 257]; and the case is that the least share of the Book is sufficient in prohibiting that and excommunicating its doer. And when he indicated their misguidance, he indicated their leading astray by his saying - expressing in the present tense; indicating their lack of repentance -: ﴿And they say to those who disbelieved﴾; and he indicated by the expression with reference, without addressing, that they say that about them; even in their absence, where there is no reason for them to speak except pure disbelief. So he said: ﴿These﴾; meaning: the disbelievers who worship idols; ﴿are more guided﴾; meaning: more upright in guidance; ﴿than those who believed﴾; meaning: they established this truth; so their blame is understood by the preference over those who are secure; and those above them by priority; ﴿a way﴾; while in their Book - from the invalidation of polytheism; its destruction; the blame of its doers; and its condemnation; in many places - there is a strong confirmation; and a great and severe matter.
