Commentary
And when he commanded to give the wealth of the orphans and the women to them, and he prohibited eating anything from it, as a deterrent to wealth and a disregard for it; and there were among the women and the wards of the orphans, and others, foolish ones. And he commanded to be economical in living, fearing injustice and need. He prohibited extravagance. And he has urged - glorified and exalted is He - on the good management of wealth in many verses of His Book, because "the good wealth is good for the good man." This was narrated by Ahmad and Ibn Mani' from Amr ibn al-As, who raised it. For a person, as long as he is not free of mind, cannot engage in obtaining what is important to him from this world; and whoever cannot obtain what is important to him from this world cannot manage the affairs of the Hereafter. And one cannot be free of mind except by means of what suffices him from wealth, because he cannot in this abode, which is based on causes, bring about benefits and avert harms except by it. So whoever seeks it for this purpose is among the greatest means that assist him in acquiring the happiness of others. And whoever seeks it for himself is among the greatest obstacles to the happiness of the Hereafter. So He, the Exalted, said: "And do not give your wealth to the foolish ones among your wards and women and others, which Allah has created for His servants, whether it is specific to you or to them, and you have a connection to it by guardianship or otherwise. For it is obligatory upon you to preserve it. The wealth that Allah has made for you is a means of support and a foundation upon which your conditions stand. And that would be a cause for its loss, and its loss is a cause for your loss. This is from the naming of the cause by the name of the effect for emphasis on its causality. And provide for them, engaging in trade therein, and he expressed it with a preposition, indicating to be economical and to invest the wealth, so that it does not cease to be a place of virtue, so that the spending and clothing come from the profit, not from the principal. And clothe them, for that is not among the prohibited; rather, it is among the noble morals and good deeds. And say to them, along with that, "a good word," meaning in accordance with the law and reason, like a good reminder and similar to it; and everything that the soul is at ease with and loves, whether in words or actions, and is not contrary to the law, is known. For that may be more beneficial in many instances of giving and more cutting off of evil. And the restriction on the foolish is included in this verse, for leaving the restriction on him is among the giving that is prohibited.
