Commentary
'And Allah'; meaning: His knowledge and power encompass all. 'Knows'; meaning: more than anyone else. 'About your enemies'; meaning: all of them; these and others; by what He knows of the inner realities. So whoever warns you of him - whoever he may be - beware of him.
And when each of the two tribes of the Ansar had allied with some of the Jews; to gain honor through them; and to seek their support; Allah (the Exalted) said - warning them against their allegiance -: 'And sufficient'; meaning: while He is sufficient for them - this was the original intent -; but He made manifest the greatest name so that His greatness may be invoked; and the matter of the enemies may be belittled; so He said: 'With Allah as a protector'; meaning: close; by performing all that the close and affectionate does.
And when the protector may have the strength of support; and the supporter may not have the affection of the protector; and support is the greatest need for the protector; He specified it in mention; informing of the gathering of the two attributes; repeating the action; and the greatest name; showing concern for the matter; so He said: 'And sufficient is Allah'; meaning: He who possesses all greatness; 'as a supporter'; meaning: for whoever is allied with Him; so the enmity of anyone will not harm him; so trust in His guardianship; and His support over them; and do not be concerned with anyone among them; nor with others; for He will suffice you against all.
