Commentary
And when the estimation was: "So the devil was his companion; for his disbelief; by his admiration; and his arrogance"; he added to it his saying: ﴿And whoever has the devil﴾ [An-Nisa: 38]; meaning: and he is his enemy; far from all good; burning with every harm; ﴿For him is a companion﴾ [An-Nisa: 38]; for indeed, he carries him to every evil; and distances him from all good; and to that he referred with his saying: ﴿What an evil companion﴾ [An-Nisa: 38].
And when the estimation was: "So what do they have in disbelief; and spending in show for one who has no harm (p-281) or benefit in his hand?"; he added to it his saying - to reprimand them; and to deny them -: ﴿And what is upon them﴾; meaning: of insignificant matters; and significant ones; ﴿If they had believed in Allah﴾; meaning: the One who has all perfection; and in His hand is everything; ﴿and the Last Day﴾; which carries every righteousness; ﴿and spent﴾; and when he described them as spending all their wealth for the insignificant enemy; he pointed to their stinginess regarding what is for Allah, the Most High, the Most Great; with something small by which they would attain much good; so he said: ﴿From what Allah has provided them﴾; the One who has absolute wealth; and magnificent generosity; and when the estimation was: "Indeed, Allah was upon them - when they squandered their wealth - capable"; he added to it his saying: ﴿And Allah﴾; meaning: the One encompassing the attributes of perfection; ﴿is Knowing of them﴾; meaning: in both situations; ﴿Knowing﴾; meaning: possessing profound knowledge; and to inform of the greatness of His knowledge of them, he preceded the beneficial preposition for specification; in other than this context.
