Commentary
And when He condemned the miserly, He followed it by condemning the extravagant, the wasteful. He said - in reference to: "the disbelievers" - or: ﴿those who are stingy﴾ [An-Nisa: 37]; clarifying that those who do not act well according to the commanded manner, in whom the command to do good to them has preceded, are of two groups: one group that completely prevents spending, and another group that prevents its description and does it for show, thus depriving it of its spirit -: ﴿And those who spend﴾; and He indicated their great desire for their spending by saying: ﴿their wealth﴾; and He indicated the baseness of their intentions and the lowliness of their aspirations by saying: ﴿for the sake of people's admiration﴾; meaning: due to their limited vision and their restriction to the tangible, like animals that only perceive the observable particulars.
And when He mentioned spending wealth in a manner that would not be pleasing to a person of reason, He mentioned the motivation for it; indicating that they have belittled themselves by what they have magnified; and that is because they have devoted themselves to servants and have been arrogant towards their Creator, the Almighty, the Majestic. He said: ﴿And they do not believe in Allah﴾; and He is the Greatest King. And when the command to do good to them here - from the parents and those mentioned with them - is more specific than those referred to in "Al-Baqarah"; He emphasized with the addition of the negation; saying: ﴿and they do not believe in the Last Day﴾; which motivates every good and deters from every evil.
