Commentary
And when He (glorified and exalted is He) clarified what is for the doer of that; as a warning; and since a number of major sins had previously been mentioned; He followed it with what is for the one who refrains; as good news; in response to one who might say: This is for the doer, so what is for the one who avoids? He said - in a general manner -: ﴿If you avoid﴾; meaning: you strive to make your intentions good; in that you leave a great abandonment; and distance yourselves from ﴿the major sins from which you are forbidden﴾; meaning: from consuming wealth unlawfully; and killing unjustly; and adultery; and other than that from what has been mentioned; Al-Bazzar narrated: Al-Haythami said - and his men are the men of the authentic narration -: from Abdullah - meaning Ibn Mas'ud - that he was asked about the major sins; and he said: "What is between the beginning of the Surah 'An-Nisa' and the end of thirty"; Al-Asbahani said: And every sin for which the Shari'ah has magnified the warning of punishment; and intensified it; or magnified its harm in the five necessities - the preservation of religion; and life; and lineage; and intellect; and wealth - is a major sin; and anything other than that is a minor sin; ﴿We will remove from you your evil deeds﴾; meaning: those which are less than the major sins; all of them; so if you commit something from the major sins; and you perform the expiations from the five daily prayers; and Friday; and the fasting of Ramadan; and pilgrimage; or you have neglected something from them; then if Allah (glorified and exalted is He) bestows upon you with illness; that will expiate the minor sins that were committed; and it does not counter the major sin; so it does not expiate all the evil deeds; due to not having performed the major sin; ﴿And We will admit you into a noble entrance﴾; meaning: it gathers honor; and good deeds; and generosity; and every good meaning; and whoever misses all of that will not have his evil deeds expiated; and he will not be admitted to this entrance; and it suffices for his exclusion that retribution occurs at some time; and Imam Ahmad said: All Muslims are in Paradise - for this verse; and the saying of the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him): "I have reserved my intercession for the people of the major sins from my nation"; so Allah (glorified and exalted is He) forgives what is less than the major sins; and the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) intercedes for the major sins; so what sin is there upon the Muslims?! Al-Asbahani mentioned this from him; and this hadith was narrated by Abu Dawood; and Al-Tirmidhi; and others; from Anas - may Allah be pleased with him.
