Commentary

And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established His will for their righteousness and encouraged following the guidance by His knowledge and wisdom; He then added to that His saying: ﴿And Allah﴾; with kindness from Him and the greatness of His authority; ﴿wants﴾; meaning: by sending down this great Book; and sending this noble Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him); ﴿to turn to you in repentance﴾; meaning: to return to you with a clear explanation of what you were upon from the paths of misguidance; for what you were in of blindness due to ignorance; and He increased them in that desire; by His saying: ﴿And He wants those who follow﴾; meaning: in a manner of exaggeration and continuity; ﴿the desires﴾; meaning: from the people of the two Scriptures and others; like Sha's ibn Qays and others from the enemies; ﴿to lead you astray﴾; meaning: away from the path of guidance ﴿a great deviation﴾; meaning: until you become what you were in of polytheism and misguidance; indeed, He, glorified is He, has conveyed the burden of guidance; in agreement with the gracious and magnificent guardian; who is not afflicted by any blemish of deficiency; and in opposition to the envious and ignorant enemy; who has descended from the peak of intellect to the depths of the nature of beasts.
