Commentary
And when he concluded that with mentioning the repentance of the fornicators; and the driving force behind fornication - according to what human nature necessitates - is the intensity of lust; and the lack of consideration for the consequences; and that this is only in youth; he connected that with his saying (the Most High) - defining the time of repentance; and its condition; encouraging haste in it; and warning against delaying it -: ﴿Indeed, repentance﴾; and it is the return of the servant from disobedience; seeking forgiveness from Allah (the Most High); and what is meant here is its acceptance; he named it by its name because without acceptance it is of no benefit; so it is as if it has no reality.
And when he likened its acceptance to a duty in that it is necessary; because the saying is not altered in his view; he expressed it with the particle of elevation indicating obligation; urging it; and encouraging it; so he said: ﴿Upon Allah﴾; meaning: the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection; ﴿for those who commit evil﴾; meaning any evil; whether it be immorality or disbelief; and he said: ﴿in ignorance﴾; indicating the severity of the ugliness of disobedience; especially fornication; from the elders; to imply through the context a warning that the matter among them is not as such - as the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) clarified in what Al-Bazzar narrated with a good chain; from Salman - may Allah be pleased with him -: "Three will not enter Paradise: the elderly fornicator; the lying imam; and the boastful poor man."; and it is in Muslim; and others; from Abu Huraira - may Allah be pleased with him -: "Three whom Allah will not speak to on the Day of Resurrection; nor look at them; nor purify them; and for them is a painful punishment: an elderly fornicator; a lying king; and a boastful poor man."; and it is from many of the companions; through many routes; and this is because the presence of death with its imminent force; from action; and the weakening of the powers that weaken the call of desire; is close to its presence through action; and this should be a deterrent to the call of ignorance; erasing the arrogance of youth; whether we say: that what is meant by ignorance is the opposite of forbearance; or the opposite of knowledge; Imam Abdul Haqq said in his book "Al-Wa'i": Abu Abdullah - meaning Al-Qazzaz - said: and ignorance is a name that applies to the people of polytheism; it is taken from ignorance; which is the opposite of knowledge; and which is the opposite of forbearance; he said: and the origin of ignorance is from their saying: "The wind made the branch move"; when it shook it; so ignorance is as if it is a movement that deviates from truth; and knowledge; thus the meaning then is: they commit evil while being entangled in folly; or in a movement; and lightness that has taken them away from truth and knowledge; so they were as if they did not know that their actions were the actions of the people of ignorance; who do not know; and he increased in repulsion from committing evil; and warning; by saying: ﴿Then they repent﴾; meaning: they renew their repentance.
And when the intention was to encourage in it; even if its duration is shortened by the recurrence of sin; he established the connection; so he said: ﴿from﴾; meaning: from a part of time; ﴿near﴾; meaning: from the time of disobedience; and they are in a respite of the appointed time; and that is a metaphor for not persisting until death; and perhaps he expressed it with 'then'; indicating the distance of repentance; especially with the proximity of those who committed the sin; for it is common that a person, if he falls into its traps, does not escape except after difficulty; and for that reason he referred to their exaltation with the tool of distance in his saying - causing their repentance; promising that he will certainly do what he has obligated upon himself without fail; even if nothing is obligatory upon him; and nothing is unbecoming of him -: ﴿So those﴾; meaning: the ones of great rank; the truthful in faith; ﴿Allah repents﴾; meaning: the One who has all the attributes of perfection; ﴿upon them﴾; meaning: He returns them to what they were in with Him of the status of closeness before committing the sin; ﴿And Allah was﴾; meaning: the One who encompasses in knowledge; and ability; ﴿Knowing﴾; meaning: of the truthful in repentance; and the liars; and their intentions; so He deals with them according to what their condition necessitates; ﴿Wise﴾; for He places things in the most appropriate place for them; so whatever He does, it cannot be undone.
