Commentary
And when He did not leave for them any semblance; and they continued in their obstinacy; He indicated (the Exalted) to what He means by saying: Indeed, they do not bear witness for you when the matter becomes clear; so He said: "But indeed"; meaning: and with what has been established of the proofs for your truthfulness; and the fact that your Book is from Allah; they do not bear witness to that; but Allah; meaning: the One to Whom belongs all command; there is none equal to Him; "bears witness"; meaning: for you; "to what He has revealed to you"; meaning: from this miraculous Book; which has rendered the eloquent speechless; and has made the rhetoricians mute; and in it are these truthful rulings for what they possess; and they want to lead away from it; so His testimony with His eloquence; and His wisdom with the truthfulness of what He brings; is the testimony of Allah; because He is its speaker; and for this reason, He explained by saying: "He revealed it with His knowledge"; meaning: being knowledgeable of its revelation in the miraculous manner; with the abundance of opposition; so no one has been able; nor will anyone be able; to bring about any change in it; nor alteration; nor addition nor reduction; nor opposition; "and the angels"; also; "bear witness"; to that; because they were present at its revelation; and were entrusted with what was revealed to them to convey - as He (the Exalted) said: "For indeed, He has sent forth from before him and from behind him watchers" [Al-Jinn: 27] "to know that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord" [Al-Jinn: 28]; and this is a discourse for the servants; according to what they know. And when it was that perhaps it might imply a deficiency; He negated it with His saying: "And sufficient is Allah"; meaning: the One Who has all perfection; "as a witness"; meaning: and sufficient is His testimony in that as a testimony over the testimony of others; and that is because He revealed it - glorified and exalted is He - as a witness with His testimony; articulating it; for its miraculous nature in its composition; and with what is in it of His knowledge of wisdom; and rulings; and the agreement with the Books of the People of the Book; so His testimony in that is the testimony of Allah; and by my life, it does not need the testimony of anyone else.
