Commentary
And when these attributes were applicable to the prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - and among their conditions was revelation; Allah, the Most High, said, to refute their doubt, which claimed: "If he were a prophet, he would have brought his book in full from the heavens, just as Moses - blessings and peace be upon him - brought the Torah." This is by their acknowledgment of the prophethood of these prophets - blessings and peace be upon them - despite the fact that they do not possess that attribute; and this did not detract from the prophethood of any one of them, nor from his message: "Indeed, we"; and it is correct that this could be a justification for "they believe"; meaning: they believed in what was revealed to you because we "revealed to you just as"; meaning: just as we "revealed to Noah"; and they believed in what he brought with the miraculous evidence that necessitated belief; without relying on another miracle; nor any other; because the proof of the indicated meaning only depends on the establishment of the proof; so when the proof is complete, the demand for another proof is a request for increase and a display of obstinacy and stubbornness - and Allah, glorified and exalted is He, does what He wills; and He rules as He desires.
And when the station of revelation - which is the prophets - is from Allah, the Most High; He said: "and the prophets after him"; meaning: they know that; by virtue of their firm grounding in knowledge; and the purity of attributes; and they do not doubt that all are from one source; although this book is more eloquent; and the expression in it of the objectives is clearer; and more comprehensive; they are more inclined to it; and more accepting of it; but as for those whose hearts are sealed; who are prevented from firmly grounding knowledge in them due to the thickness of the veil; until they only see its secrets from behind a curtain; they are not receptive to the light of knowledge; which is prepared for belief; so they hastened to disbelief; and rushed towards humiliation and degradation; and in the Hereafter, to wrath; and the Fire.
And when the Most High summarized the mention of the prophets, He detailed; so He said - alerting to the honor of those He mentioned; and their fame -: "And We revealed to Abraham"; meaning: your father; and their father likewise; "and Ishmael"; meaning: his eldest son; who is your father after them; "and Isaac"; and he is his second son; and their father; "and Jacob"; meaning: the son of Isaac; "and the tribes"; meaning: the children of Jacob.
And when He summarized by mentioning the tribes after detailing those before them; He detailed those after them; so He said: "and Jesus"; meaning: the one who is their last; from the descendants of Jacob; "and Job"; and he is from the descendants of Ais ibn Isaac; as they mentioned; "and Jonah, and Aaron, and Solomon"; and when the station was for glorification by revelation; and David - blessings and peace be upon him - was from the people of the Book, He said: "And We gave David the Psalms"; meaning: they claim to believe in it; while acknowledging that it was not revealed in full; nor written from the heavens.
