Commentary
And when he mentioned their refusal; and their prevention from the virtues which there is nothing better than them; nor more honorable; he followed it with their boldness in committing vile acts; in which their oppression of the creation is found; and he said: ﴿And their taking of usury﴾; meaning: it is vile in itself; disgraceful for its possessor; ﴿And indeed﴾; meaning: while they indeed; ﴿were forbidden from it﴾; so they combined the violation of sound nature; with the audacity to violate the sanctity of Allah, the Most Great. (p-501) And when he mentioned usury; he followed it with what is more general than it; and he said: ﴿And their consuming the wealth of the people unjustly﴾; meaning: whether it was usury; or bribery; or others; and when he mentioned some of what He punished them with in this world; he followed it with their recompense in the Hereafter; and he said - connecting it to his saying 'We have forbidden' -: ﴿And We have prepared for the disbelievers﴾; meaning: those for whom disbelief has become a firmly established trait; and they died upon it; and when he knew that among them were those who would believe; and enter Paradise; he said: ﴿Among them﴾; and when the recompense is of the same kind as the action; he said: ﴿A painful punishment﴾; meaning: because of what they caused pain to the people; by consuming their wealth; and covering their rights from the virtues; and the merits.
It was mentioned that the prohibition of wealth through usury; and other types of falsehood; is stated in the Torah; he said in the second book - after what I have presented in 'Al-Baqarah'; of the command to do good to people; and the prohibition of harming them -: (And if you lend your money to the poor who is with you from my people; then do not be to him like a creditor; nor take from him usury); and he said in the third: (And if your brother becomes poor and seeks your help; do not leave him in the position of a stranger living with you; rather, be generous to him; and beware of taking from him usury or a gift; do not lend him with a gift); and he said in the fifth: (And do not feed the House of Allah, your Lord, with the price of a fornicator; nor the price of a dog; nor take from your brothers usury; in silver; nor in food; nor in anything that you assist them with; (p-502) and as for the stranger, take from him if you wish).
Thus, it has been established from their Torah the prohibition of usury; and as for specifying it to the stranger, it is certainly a substitution from them; as evidenced by what I have presented from it in 'Al-Baqarah'; at His saying (the Exalted): ﴿Indeed, those who believe and those who are Jews﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 62]; from the prohibition of betrayal of the enemy; and at His saying (the Exalted): ﴿Do not worship except Allah﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 83]; from the goodness to all people; especially the stranger; and Allah is the Grantor of success.
