Commentary

And when He clarified this from His greatness, He followed it with another matter greater than it; He said: ﴿And We raised﴾; meaning: by Our greatness. And when He had filled the direction of above by covering all of their bodies; and none of them was safe from that; He removed the preposition; and said: ﴿Above them is the mountain﴾; meaning: the great mountain. Then He mentioned the reason for raising it; He said: ﴿By their covenant﴾; meaning: until they committed to it; and they submitted to it; and they accepted it.

And when he mentioned the covenant in this strange manner, he followed it with what they broke in it, despite its ease, as evidence of their bad nature. He said: "And We said to them"; meaning: by what was repeated to them from witnessing Our greatness; "Enter the gate"; meaning: the one for the Sacred House; "prostrating"; meaning: they broke that firm covenant and changed it; "And We said to them"; meaning: on the tongue of Musa - blessings and peace be upon him - in many parts of the Torah; "Do not transgress"; meaning: do not exceed what We have specified for you; "on the Sabbath"; meaning: do not work in it any work - naming something by its cause -; it was called "transgression" because the scholar, due to his intense focus on something, seems as if he is transgressing; "And We took from them"; meaning: in all of that; "a strong covenant"; and I assert that what is meant by this - and Allah knows best - is on the tongue of Musa - blessings and peace be upon him - because He repeatedly emphasized it to them in the Torah regarding the observance of the Sabbath; and He enjoined them with it; and He made a covenant with them in it that was rare in anything else from the branches. Some of the translators of the Torah said in the second book, in the ten verses that begin with: (I am your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt; from servitude and bondage; you shall have no other gods besides Me); what its text states: (Remember the observance of the Sabbath; and its purity is six days; labor in them; and do all that you are commanded to do; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of Allah your Lord; do not do any work in it; you, your son, your daughter, your servant, your maid, your cattle, and the resident in your towns; for the Lord created the heavens and the earth in six days; and the seas and all that is in them; and He rested on the seventh day; and for this reason Allah blessed the seventh day and sanctified it; honor your father); to the end of what has been mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah; then the ten verses returned in the beginning of the fifth book; and He said - regarding the Sabbath -: (Observe the Sabbath day and its observance; as Allah your Lord has commanded you; and do your works in six days; as Allah your Lord has commanded you; and do your works in six days; so do what you wish to do in them; but as for the Sabbath day, it is your Lord's week; do not do any work in it; you, your sons, your daughters, your servants, your maids, your oxen, your donkeys, and all your livestock; and the resident who is in your towns; so that your servants may rest); to the end of what is in the beginning of this Surah; at: "And He guides you to the ways of those who were before you" [An-Nisa: 26]; and He said in the second after that: (And the Lord said to Musa: And you command the Children of Israel to observe the Sabbaths; for it is a sign of the covenant; and a mark between Me and you for your generations; that you may know that I am the Lord; your God; who sanctifies you; observe the Sabbath day, for it is a purification designated for you; and whoever breaks it and takes work in it, let him be killed; and whoever does any work, let that person perish from his people; do your works for six days; and the seventh day is a day of Sabbath sanctified for the Lord; for the Lord created the heavens and the earth in six days; and the seas and what is in them; and this is on the seventh day; and He entrusted to Musa - blessings and peace be upon him - when his speech was completed to him on Mount Sinai the Tablets of the Testimony); and He emphasized the observance of it to them in other places; until He legislated for them the causes of the earth; and so forth; He said in the second book also: (Plant your land for six years; and carry its burdens; and in the seventh year, sow it; and let it be eaten by the poor of your people; and what remains after that let the beasts of the field eat; and likewise do with your vineyards and your olive trees; do your work in six days; and on the seventh day, you shall rest; so that your ox and your donkey may rest; and your maid and your son of your maid may rest; and the resident in your towns); then He mentioned the festivals in the third book; and prohibited work in them; and He said - in some of them -: (And every soul that does any work on that day shall perish; so do not do any work in it; for it is a continuous tradition for you forever; in all your dwellings; let this day be a Sabbath of Sabbaths); then He commanded them with the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days; and He said: (So that your generations may know that I caused the Children of Israel to dwell in booths; when I brought them out of the land of Egypt); then He mentioned some of the offerings; and He said: (And Aaron shall arrange the bread in two rows on the sixth day; which is the day of gathering; and the Lord spoke to Musa; and said to him on Mount Sinai: Speak to the Children of Israel; and tell them: When you enter the land which I give you as an inheritance, the land shall observe a Sabbath for the Lord; plant your fields for six years; and prune your vineyards for six years; and harvest your crops for six years; but in the seventh year, let it be a Sabbath of rest for the land; do not plant your fields; and do not prune your vineyards; and let what grows in your land in that year be harvested without being sown; and do not cut the grapes of your vineyards; but let it be a Sabbath of rest for the land; for you; and for your children; and for your maids; and for your brothers; and for the residents who dwell with you; and count seven times seven; forty-nine years; and sanctify the fiftieth year; and let the return of things be to their owners; and do not plant your land in that year; and do not harvest what grows in it; and do not cut its grass; for it is the year of return; and fear Allah for I am Allah your Lord; observe My commandments; and act upon them; and observe My laws; and act upon them; and dwell in your land with tranquility and peace; so that the land may yield its produce for you; and you may eat; and be satisfied; and dwell in it in peace; and if you say: From where will we eat in the seventh year in which we do not plant; do not worry; I will send down to you My blessings in the sixth year; and your land will yield for you the produce of three years; until when you plant in the eighth year, you will not need its produce; for you will eat from the sixth year until the ninth; and as for the land, it shall never be sold in a valid sale; for the land is Mine).

And in it, there is something that is not permissible to be stated in our Sharia; the attribution of rest to Him - glorified and exalted is He -; this is alongside the fact that He confirmed - glorified and exalted is He - the covenants upon them regarding the oneness of Allah; and the preservation of the rulings; in all of the Torah; in the manner that you will see in what I convey from it in this book.
