Commentary
And when He completed - glorified and exalted is He - what He intended; from the ugliness of the condition of those who sit and engage in His verses; which are free from it; and from what follows in describing them; and clarifying their intention (p-447) with that sitting; from the prohibition against their like; and from the punishment of those who did like their actions - until He concluded with the severest punishment of the hypocrites; and urged repentance with what He concluded with the attributes of gratitude; and knowledge; He informed that He despises the engagement of the disbelievers; whose sitting He deemed ugly while being involved in it; and likewise every public display of evil; except for what He exempted; so whoever advances upon what He does not love; has not fulfilled the right of His servitude; so He said - explaining what has passed; before the commencement of the matter of the hypocrites; from the command to greet well -: 'Indeed, Allah does not love'; meaning: the One who possesses the attributes of perfection; 'the public display'; meaning: what appears; so it becomes in the category of public display; 'of evil'; meaning: that which is bad; and harms; 'from speech'; meaning: to anyone; whoever they may be; for that is not from the gratitude of Allah (exalted is He) in doing good to His servants; and His dependents; nor from the gratitude of people in anything; and he does not thank Allah who does not thank people; 'except for one who'; meaning: he who publicly complains; 'was wronged'; meaning: if there was wrongdoing against him from anyone; whoever they may be; then it is permissible for him to publicly complain; and to seek redress from him; and to pray against him; even if it displeases him; as long as he does not exceed the limits.
And when the saying is something that can be heard; and there is from the wrongdoing that which may be hidden; He said - encouraging and warning -: 'And Allah was'; meaning: the One who has complete encompassing knowledge; 'Hearing'; meaning: of all that can be heard; from public display and otherwise; 'Knowing'; meaning: of all that can be known; (p-448) so beware of Him; lest He does to you the act of the angry; and the public display of one who was wronged - even if it is included in what Allah (exalted is He) loves; considering that the exception is connected - but making it among the generality of evil; even if it is from the aspect of similarity; indeed, there is a subtlety in it; which is the prohibition of the discerning from engaging in it; and urging him towards forgiveness; for whoever knows that his action is such that the name of evil applies to it - in whatever way it is applied - he refrains from it; if he is successful.
