Commentary
And when it was mentioned previously that forgiveness for the disbeliever - whether he is a hypocrite or not - is difficult; and it was followed by what is appropriate; until it concluded with what indicated that hypocrisy is the gravest type of disbelief; it excluded it; indicating that other disbelievers in this exclusion are more deserving; as a warning that this exaggerated denial is only for those who die upon that; but it was presented in that manner to emphasize the severity of what was mentioned in its context; and to deter from it; so He said (exalted is He): "Except for those who repent"; meaning: they have returned from what they were upon of hypocrisy; with regret and cessation; "and they rectify"; meaning: their apparent deeds; from the prayer in which they used to show off; and others; by ceasing from hypocrisy; "and they hold fast to Allah"; meaning: they strive for their protection - that is: their connection - to the Greatest King; in not returning to what they were upon.
And when ceasing from hypocrisy - of which one type is showing off - is fundamental; and the head - in the utmost difficulty; He said - encouraging the struggle against the soul in it -: "And they dedicate their religion entirely to Allah"; meaning: all of it; "to Allah"; meaning: to Him belongs all perfection; so they do not intend by anything of their worship except His face; neither showing off nor otherwise; "So those"; meaning: the high-ranking ones; "are with the believers"; meaning: those for whom faith has become a firmly established attribute in Paradise; and if they are punished for their sins; then in the highest level of the Fire; "And Allah will give"; meaning: the One who encompasses all things with ability and knowledge; "the believers"; meaning: with a promise that there is no breaking of it; even if they were afflicted before that with what befell them; and even if their punishment was prolonged; as a purification for them from sins; by what the word "will" indicates; "a great reward"; meaning: by eternal life in Paradise; whose bliss does not end; and whose inhabitants do not suffer any distress; so they will share with those who were with them; for they are the people with whom their companion will not suffer.
