Commentary
And when what he intended of denouncing those who claimed faith by taking the disbelievers as allies was concluded; which necessitates the prohibition of such taking; he stated it clearly addressing the believers; and said: ﴿O you who have believed﴾; meaning: they acknowledge faith with their tongues; whether truthfully or falsely; ﴿do not take﴾; meaning: do not burden yourselves with anything other than what the sound innate nature calls you to; so that you take ﴿the disbelievers﴾; meaning: those who openly disbelieve; deeply immersed in it; ﴿as allies﴾; meaning: as close ones; you do with them what a close one does with his relative in terms of affection and support.
And when the deeply immersed in faith is the highest of people; and there are ranks beneath him that are numerous; he alerted to that; and to the lowliness of their intent; by the preposition; and said: ﴿besides the believers﴾; meaning: those deeply immersed in faith; and this is an indication that it is not correct for one who supports them to claim faith; and for that reason he said in denial: ﴿Do you intend﴾; meaning: by your alliance with them; ﴿to make for Allah﴾; meaning: the One whose might cannot be endured; for He possesses all perfection; ﴿against you﴾; meaning: in relation to hypocrisy; ﴿a clear authority﴾; meaning: a clear evidence of your disbelief; by your following other than the path of the believers; ﴿clear﴾; obvious; justifying your punishment; and your disgrace; and making you among the ranks of the hypocrites.
