Commentary
Then he described them - glorified and exalted is He - with what defines them; he said: "Those who are waiting for you"; meaning: they remain in their state, waiting for the occurrence of what annoys you; "So if you have a victory"; meaning: a manifestation, and honor, and triumph; and he said: "from Allah"; meaning: the One who has all greatness - as a reminder to the believers of what sustains their reliance upon Him and their need for Him -; "They said"; meaning: those who believed, hypocrisy for you, O believers; "Did we not used to be with you?"; meaning: appearing with our bodies, by what you hear from our words; so let us share in your victory; "And if it is for the disbelievers"; meaning: the openly defiant; and he said: "a share"; belittling their victory; and that it does not harm what has been attained by the believers from the victory; "They said" to the disbelievers; to share with them in their share; "Did we not take control over you?"; meaning: we sought your protection and maintained your affection; until we gained control over all your secrets; and we dominated them; and we mixed with you as blood mixes with the body; from their saying: "He surrounded him"; meaning: he encompassed him; and preserved him; "And we prevented you from the believers"; meaning: from their dominance over you by what we used to deceive them with; and we spread among them the rumors; and the matters that would divert them from many of their objectives; to confirm their belief in us; to show our faith; and our satisfaction from the flattery of those we dislike by what no human would approve of.
And when this was a matter that was grievous, unsettling, and painful for the people of Allah - glorified and exalted is He - it caused His saying: "So Allah"; meaning: by what He has of all attributes of greatness; "will judge between you"; meaning: O believers, and the disbelievers, the secretive and the openly defiant.
And when the judgment is in both abodes; he clarified that it is in the abode where nothing appears for anyone other than Him, neither outwardly nor inwardly; and all hidden matters are revealed therein; so he said: "On the Day of Resurrection"; and when this might despair them from the world; he said: "And Allah will not make"; he expressed with the tool of emphasis; and with the greatest name; to distance the dominance over the disbelievers; for what they have at that time of strength and multitude; "for the disbelievers"; meaning: whether they are secretive or openly defiant; "over the believers"; meaning: all of them; "a way"; meaning: a means, in this world or the Hereafter; and this is a belittling of their opinions; and a mockery of their minds; as if he is saying: "O you who are waiting for the friends of Allah to turn the tables; wishing for the enemies to have victory - and the evidence has established that all honor belongs to Allah - how misguided you are in your assumption that He will forsake His allies! And how hardened are your hearts!"; and it includes in its generality that no Muslim is killed by a dhimmi; nor does a disbeliever possess the wealth of a Muslim by force.
