Commentary
And when the one who persists after the descent of this guidance is causing disbelief; renewing it; He alerted to his drowning in distance by His anger - glorified and exalted is He - for his persistence; informing that steadfastness upon disbelief is very great; and He depicted it in the ugliest form; and in that is a gentle urging to turn away from disagreement; so He said: ﴿Indeed, those who have believed﴾; meaning: by what they were prepared for from the first nature of faith; ﴿then disbelieved﴾; meaning: they committed disbelief; thus they distorted what Allah established from their nature; ﴿then believed﴾; meaning: truly; or with strength; after the coming of the Messenger; by what He prepared them for by manifesting the evidence; and establishing the proofs; ﴿then disbelieved﴾; meaning: by that Messenger; or by another Messenger; by renewing disbelief; or persisting in it; ﴿then they increased﴾; meaning: by their insistence on disbelief until death; ﴿disbelief that Allah would not﴾; meaning: He who has the attributes of perfection; ﴿forgive them﴾; meaning: as long as they are in this state; for He does not forgive that partners be associated with Him; ﴿nor to guide them to a way﴾; meaning: of the paths that lead to the intended goal.
