Commentary
And when they began to give their wealth to the orphans; and they began to marry those among them who have wealth; and they would consort with some of them; Allah, the Exalted, followed that with a ruling regarding the conditions of discord between spouses; He said: ﴿And if a woman﴾; meaning: one; or regarding co-wives; and since the fear of the disliked is concerning; He said: ﴿fears﴾; meaning: she anticipates; and she thinks based on what appears to her from the signs; ﴿from her husband, disobedience﴾; meaning: arrogance; due to what she sees of his disdain for her by withholding her rights; or mistreatment in companionship; ﴿or turning away﴾; from her in his heart; by not allowing her to see from his conversation; and his companionship; and his intimacy; what she used to see before that; she fears that it may lead to separation; even if he is making an effort to be kind to her; by his words and actions; ﴿there is no sin﴾; meaning: no burden; and inclination; "upon them to reconcile"; meaning: the two spouses; ﴿between them﴾; reconciliation; and making peace; this is according to the reading of the majority; and according to the reading of the Kufans with the 'yaa' being pronounced and the 'saa' being silent; and the 'laam' being broken; the implication is: "reform"; but since what is commanded can be achieved with the least that falls under the name of reconciliation, the source was built on other than these two actions; so He said - making it simple -: ﴿a reconciliation﴾; by her softening by leaving some of the dowry; or some of the division; or something like that; and for him to be kind to her in return for that in good companionship.
And when the implication was: "and there is no sin upon them to separate in a just manner"; He added to it His saying: ﴿and reconciliation﴾; meaning: by each of them leaving their right; or some of their right; ﴿is better﴾; meaning: than the separation which was indicated by the previous sentence; because reconciliation is based on complete kindness with satisfaction from both sides; and separation is based on justice which usually entails the anger of one of them; even if it shares with reconciliation in goodness; but it is preferred; and the specification of separation with kindness is because the foundation of the Surah is on continuation. And when the source of the quarrel that prevents reconciliation is stubbornness in character; Allah, glorified and exalted is He, depicted that; as a deterrent from it; He said - interjecting between these sentences; to encourage generosity; establishing the action for the unknown; indicating that no one is pleased with this attribute -: ﴿And the souls were brought forth﴾; meaning: the one looking at its own essence in admiration; ﴿greed﴾; meaning: avarice; and bad character; and lack of goodness; and hardship; and stinginess with what is available; and all of it returns to bad character; and a vile nature; and the deviation from the original disposition; which He alluded to by the bringing forth that is constant; which cannot be escaped from; except with great struggle; by which one earns much reward.
And when this is a bad character, its doer is not mentioned; the meaning is: a presenter brought it to him; so it became attached to him; it does not separate from him except by the success of Allah - glorified and exalted is He - in overcoming it upon him; by reminding him of what is with Him - glorified and exalted is He - of good reward; and when the estimation is: 'If you are stingy, then He knows what is in stinginess of what necessitates blame'; He added to it His saying: ﴿And if you do good﴾; meaning: you perform good by maintaining your marriage; and what you are encouraged to do of good companionship; even if you dislike it; ﴿and you fear﴾; meaning: you perform piety; by avoiding everything that causes harm of any kind; indicating that the stingy is neither a doer of good nor one who fears; ﴿for indeed, Allah﴾; meaning: He who encompasses the attributes of perfection; ﴿is﴾; eternally and forever; ﴿All-Aware of what you do﴾; meaning: in every stinginess and goodness; ﴿All-Aware﴾; meaning: having complete knowledge of it; and you know that He is the most generous of the generous; so He will reward you for it with the best reward.
