Commentary
And when He - glorified and exalted is He - uncovered their falsehood; and clarified their wickedness; they denied that anyone could have a better religion than one who follows the religion of Ibrahim; whom they claim was upon their religion; a claim that preceded the uncovering of their faults; and the exposing of their veils in "Aal 'Imran"; so He said - referring to what you can understand: "So who has a better religion; and who is more just; and who is a judge than He - glorified and exalted is He?!" -: ﴿And who has a better religion﴾; or the understanding could be: "Because they excelled in their religion; and who has a better religion than them?!"; but He manifested the description; generally; and made the ruling dependent on it; and taught what the believer should do; and urged it; so He said: ﴿from those who have submitted﴾; meaning: gave; and when the intended meaning was the sincerity which is the noblest of things; He expressed it by the face which is the noblest of the limbs; so He said: ﴿his face﴾; meaning: his direction; meaning: the direction to which he turns his face - that is: his entire intention; which is consistent with Islam itself - all of it; ﴿to Allah﴾ so there is no movement for him nor stillness except in what pleases Him; because He is the One who has no equal; so it is a restriction without the form of restriction; thus it indicated the invalidity of the way of whoever turns his face towards others; by seeking assistance or otherwise; especially the Mu'tazilah; who see obedience as stemming from themselves; and they believe that it necessitates their reward; and disobedience likewise; and that it necessitates their punishment; so in reality they do not hope for anyone but themselves; nor do they fear anyone else; and the people of the Sunnah have entrusted the management and creation and existence to the Truth; so they are the Muslims.
And when He (exalted) expressed the completeness of belief in the past; He conditioned it with permanence; and the apparent actions; by His saying: ﴿and He is﴾; meaning: while He is ﴿the Benefactor﴾; meaning: a believer; watchful; there is no negligence with Him at all; rather, benevolence is a trait that is firmly established for Him; because He worships Allah as if He sees Him; for these ten words encompass all of religion; both its roots and branches; along with the encouragement of complete praise for its followers; and the understanding of complete blame for others.
And when this encompasses whoever was on the religion of any prophet before its abrogation, he has specified it by saying: ﴿And follow﴾; meaning: with effort from him; ﴿the religion of Abraham﴾; who is known among all sects to have called only to Allah - glorified and exalted is He - alone; and he disavowed anything else; from a star; and a planet; and an idol; and nature; and others; while that follower is ﴿inclined﴾; meaning: gentle; easy; leaning with the evidence; and 'the religion' is what the original nature called to; with the assistance of sound intellect; from the perfection of Islam through monotheism. And when the estimation was - as an encouragement for this following -: 'Indeed, Allah - glorified and exalted is He - made the religion of Abraham the best of religions; and He created him on the day He created him as inclined'; he added to it His saying: ﴿And Allah took﴾; meaning: the greatest king; taking one who is supportive in that; striving in it; ﴿Abraham as a friend﴾; due to his being inclined; and that is an expression of his being honored with a dignity resembling the dignity of a friend with his friend; from the repetition of the messengers with revelation between him and him; and the response to the call; and the manifestation of miracles upon him; and upon his family; and victory over enemies; and other such kindnesses; and He manifested his name in a place of concealment; explicitly stating the intended; as a precaution against ambiguity; and elevating his status; by mentioning him.
