Commentary
And when He (the Most High) informed about what He has prepared for them; and for those whom He has led astray; of punishment; and about what He has prepared for the believers of reward; and they were deluding themselves with empty hopes; that there is no accountability upon them for playing with the religion; neither in this world; nor in the Hereafter; and they are encouraged in that by the people of the Book; and they claim that they are the children of Allah and His beloved ones; that He does not hold them accountable for anything; and that none will enter Paradise except those who are Jews or Christians; or those who are interceded for; and similar lies; by which they entice those who support them that they will save them; and the polytheists were saying: "We are more in wealth and children, and we are not to be punished" [Saba: 35]; and similar to that - as Al-Asi ibn Wa'il said to Khabbab ibn Al-Aratt - and he had demanded a debt that he owed him -: Leave me to that house so I may pay you what I have in it; by Allah, you and your companion will not be more favored with Allah than me; nor will you have a greater share; so Allah revealed regarding that: "Have you seen the one who has disbelieved in Our signs" [Maryam: 77]; the verses from the end of 'Maryam'; and the people of the Book say to them: You are on a better guidance; when that was said, He (the Most High) - responding to the two groups - said: "It is not"; meaning: what Allah has promised him; and what He has warned him; "by your empty hopes"; meaning: O Arabs; "nor by the empty hopes of the people of the Book"; meaning: that which the devil has made them all hope for.
And when their hopes were that they would not be recompensed for their vile deeds; this led to; without a doubt; His saying: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it"; meaning: with calamities; of diseases and others; immediately if good is intended for him; and eventually if evil is intended for him; and how good it is to attribute it to the devil's empty promises; mentioned in His saying: "He promises them and entices them"! So the words will be sufficient in revealing the shortcomings of the devils of the jinn; then of mankind; in their deception of whoever follows them; despairing for whoever accepted from them; and how brilliant its conclusion is with His saying: "And he will not find for him"! And when everyone is deficient in relation to his Lord; He expressed it with His saying: "besides Allah"; meaning: the One who possesses all greatness; "a protector"; meaning: a close one; who does with him what a close one does; "nor a supporter"; meaning: one who will support him at any time; and how severe its connection is with the conclusion of the first of the warning verses against them: "Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Book buying misguidance" [An-Nisa: 44]; to His saying: "And sufficient is Allah as a protector and sufficient is Allah as a supporter" [An-Nisa: 45]! Indicating that the aim of the hypocrites in supporting the people of the Book; and following them; is only protection and support; and that they have wasted their wish; so they sought help from one who has no support; and left the One whose support is only for Him.
