Commentary
And when He admonished - glorified and exalted is He - in this incident; and warned; and prohibited; and commanded; He clarified His favor upon His Prophet ﷺ in his protection from what they intended of disputing him about the traitor; by His saying (exalted is He): ﴿And if it were not for the favor of Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King; ﴿upon you﴾; meaning: by sending down the Book; ﴿and His mercy﴾; meaning: by elevating your matter; and your protection from every schemer; and your preservation among your companions who came to dispute about their cousin; the thief of the armor; in adhering to the apparent; and not intending obstinacy; ﴿A group among them intended﴾; meaning: a faction with the ability to turn and shape; they continue to shape and twist opinions; and turn matters; and manage thoughts in arranging what they want; ﴿to mislead you﴾; meaning: to cause you to fall into that; by ruling on the innocence of the accused; but Allah preserved you among your companions, so they did not intend that; rather, they aimed to defend their companion with what they had not verified; and if they had intended it, they would not have misled you; ﴿And they do not mislead﴾; meaning: in a state of this intention; ﴿except themselves﴾; for the burden of that is upon them; ﴿And they do not harm you﴾; meaning: they do not renew in harming you in state or wealth by misleading; nor otherwise; ﴿of anything﴾; and it is a promise of the continuity of protection in the apparent and the hidden; like the verse of “Al-Ma'idah”; also; and although this is in its context apparent in the hidden; and that is apparent in the apparent; ﴿And Allah has sent down﴾; meaning: He who has all greatness; ﴿upon you﴾; and you are the greatest of creation in protection for your nation; ﴿the Book﴾; meaning: which preceded the first story indicating its completeness; and its gathering of the good of both abodes; ﴿and wisdom﴾; meaning: the understanding of all the purposes of the Book; so your actions and the actions of those who follow you in it are in the best of conditions; so you will achieve the realization of knowledge; and the perfection of action; and He generalized by His saying: ﴿And He taught you what you did not know﴾; meaning: from the problems; and others; in the unseen and the witnessed; from the states of religion and the world; ﴿And the favor of Allah﴾; meaning: the One who is unique with all perfection; ﴿upon you is great﴾; meaning: with other matters that do not fall under enumeration; and this is one of the greatest proofs that knowledge is the noblest of virtues.
