Commentary
And when he prohibited supporting the traitor and warned against it, he called for repentance from all evil. He said - adding to what he means by saying: "So whoever persists in such a dispute will find Allah All-Knowing, All-Wise": ﴿And whoever does evil﴾; meaning: something ugly; transgressing that harms others legally; intentionally - as Ta'uma did - or without intention; ﴿or wrongs himself﴾; by that which does not extend to others; whether it be polytheism or otherwise; or by being content with it while there is something better than it; and he did not name it evil because he does not intend by it what harms himself in the present; ﴿then seeks forgiveness from Allah﴾; meaning: he should ask the Greatest King for His forgiveness through repentance; with its conditions; ﴿will find Allah﴾; meaning: the One who encompasses all perfection; ﴿Forgiving﴾; meaning: erasing the missteps; ﴿Merciful﴾; meaning: exceedingly generous to those who turn to Him: "Whoever draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length; and whoever draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom; and whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him running." Ishaq ibn Rahawaih narrated from Umar - may Allah be pleased with him - and Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili narrated from Abu Darda - may Allah be pleased with him - that this verse abrogated ﴿Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it﴾ [An-Nisa: 123]; and that it was revealed after it.
