108They feel shy before people, but do not feel shy before Allah. He (Allah) is with them when they make plans at night to give a statement He (Allah) does not like. Allah encompasses whatever they do.

Commentary

Then he followed it by criticizing this traitor; and his lack of contemplation; and informing that the argument on his behalf is of little benefit. So he said - glorified and exalted is He - in amazement at them with what is like an explanation for what came before: ﴿They hide﴾; meaning: these traitors: a prey; and whoever supports him; while he knows the hidden truth of his matter; ﴿from the people﴾; out of shame from them; and fear that they may harm them for witnessing them standing with the illusion; like animals; ﴿And they do not hide﴾; meaning: they seek and establish secrecy by not being treacherous; ﴿from Allah﴾; meaning: the One from whom nothing is more evident; due to His attributes of perfection; ﴿And He﴾; meaning: while He is; ﴿with them﴾; nothing of their conditions is hidden from Him; nor is anything of their punishment beyond His ability; so hiding from Him can only be by abandoning treachery; and pure sincerity; so woe to them from most of their actions; and sayings; and conditions; ﴿When﴾; meaning: at the time; ﴿they plot at night﴾; meaning: they arrange at night; on the path of deep thought; and precision in opinion; ﴿what He does not approve of in words﴾; meaning: of falsehood; and swearing to it; so they do not feel ashamed of it; nor do they fear; due to the dominance of ignorance and heedlessness over their hearts; and their lack of faith in the unseen. And when He established His knowledge - glorified and exalted is He - of this; regarding their condition; He generalized and said: ﴿And Allah﴾; meaning: the One to whom everything is in His grasp; for He is the One who has no equal; ﴿with what they do﴾; meaning: of this; and other than it; ﴿Surrounding﴾; meaning: in knowledge and power.
