Commentary
And when the first of these stories is the amazement at the condition of those who were given a share of the Book in their misguidance; and their leading astray; then the amazement at their belief in al-Jibt and al-Taghut; then the amazement at the condition of those who claimed to believe in this Book; while being with the previous Books; then they accepted the judgment of others; and He - glorified and exalted is He - presented the foundations of that; and its branches; and established the evidence; until it rose above the two stars; and its light spread over all the horizons; and He concluded that with the struggle against the falsifiers with proof; and the sword; and He surrounded that with the attributes of knowledge; and wisdom; He matched - in the best manner - the news that He revealed this Book with truth; and clarified its benefit which the hypocrites turned away from in seeking something other than it; so He said: ﴿Indeed, We have sent down﴾; meaning: with what we have of greatness; which every greatness falls short of; ﴿to you﴾; meaning: specifically; and you are the most complete of creation; ﴿the Book﴾; meaning: the complete; encompassing all good; ﴿with truth﴾; meaning: intertwined with what corresponds to reality (p-388) ﴿to judge between the people﴾; meaning: generally; because your call is general; so there is no one more misguided than one who turns away from your judgment; and seeks good from other than your Book; and He indicated that He does not speak out of desire; by His saying: ﴿with what Allah has shown you﴾; meaning: He made you aware of that which has comprehensive power; and complete knowledge; so if He has clarified something to you in the utmost clarity, then do it; and if not, then wait for His clarification; then He - glorified and exalted is He - began to complete what remained of their news; and revealed what was hidden of their secrets; and the signs of them; so that they may be known; and the believers may avoid them, lest they be branded with their brand.
And when Allah, glorified and exalted is He, had alleviated upon him, blessings and peace be upon him, by legislating for him contentment in judging by the apparent; and not being tasked with probing into their secrets; regarding the case of Tu'mah ibn Ubayriq; because his matter was problematic; for he had stolen a shield; and deposited it with a Jew; and it was found with him; so he claimed that Tu'mah had deposited it with him; and this was not established against Tu'mah; until Allah, glorified and exalted is He, revealed the verse; so He intended to reveal it in this incident; and others; of what He, glorified and exalted is He, desires in the matter of judging by what is in the essence of the matter; of which only Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows; as the correct opinion held by the majority is; as our Sheikh, the judge of the Shafi'i school in Egypt; Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Hajar, may Allah have mercy on him, stated in Al-Isabah in the Names of the Companions; that Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, is a prophet; and our prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, was given the like of all the miracles of the prophets, may Allah's blessings be upon them, along with what he was uniquely granted above them; the best of prayers; and the most complete peace and blessings; so He, exalted is He, said - referring to what is known to be His decree; in the manner of: 'So judge by what We show you of the seas of knowledge that We have deposited in this book' -: 'And do not be an ally to the treacherous'; meaning: for their sake; of Tu'mah and others; 'as a disputant'; meaning: a disputant for those who dispute with them.
