Commentary
And when he mentioned the conditions of the disbelievers, he followed it with the conditions of their opposites. He said: ﴿And they were driven﴾; and their being driven to the good place indicates that their position was good. This is because whoever is in the least distress is prepared for a pleasant place, and does not need to be driven to it. So there is a great difference between the two types of driving; this is a driving of honor, and that is a driving of humiliation and vengeance. And this, by my life, is one of the marvelous types of eloquence; that He - glorified and exalted is He - brings a word regarding the disbelievers that indicates their humiliation by their punishment, and brings that very word, in its form, regarding the righteous, indicating their honor by their good reward. So glorified is He who revealed it, a miracle of structure, capable of meanings, sweet in sources and repetitions.
And when this is not for all the happy ones, but for the pure among them, this is indicated by His saying: ﴿Those who are conscious of their Lord﴾; meaning: not all believers; ﴿Their Lord﴾; meaning: those who, whenever He increases them in goodness, they increase in awe of Him. Ahmad, Abu Ya'la, and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih narrated from Abu Sa'id - may Allah be pleased with him - that the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - said: "A day whose measure is fifty thousand years." It was said: What is the length of this day? The Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: "By Him in whose hand is my soul, it will be made light for the believer until it is lighter upon him than a prescribed prayer." And Al-Tabarani and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr - may Allah be pleased with both of them - that the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: "You will gather on the Day of Resurrection..." and he mentioned the hadith until he said: They said: Where are the believers on that day? He said: "They will have chairs made of light placed for them, and they will be shaded by clouds; that day will be shorter for the believers than an hour of the day." And it may be that the driving is an indication of the compulsion of the measures for the two groups towards the actions that are the causes of the two abodes; ﴿to Paradise in groups﴾; the people of prayer, those who are devoted to it, those who are abundant in it, in a distinct manner; and the people of fasting likewise; and other than that from the deeds whose effects appear on the faces.
And when he mentioned the driving, he mentioned its goal by saying: ﴿Until when they arrive there﴾; and when the closing of the door to the incoming indicates a disregard for it, and in his standing until it is opened is a type of humiliation, he said: ﴿And it was opened﴾; meaning: while it had been opened ﴿its doors﴾; meaning: as an honor for them, before their arrival to it, by the very opening, and by what comes out to them from its fragrance, and they see from its flowers and its beauty; so that this would be a second driver for them to what they have not seen the like of, nor have they seen anything like it.
And when he mentioned their honoring by the conditions of the abode; he mentioned their honoring by the noble guardians; he said - in continuation of the answer to 'if'; with what can be understood as: 'Its guardians received them with all that pleases them' -: 'And its guardians said to them'; meaning: at the time of arrival; 'Peace be upon you'; hastening their joy; with the good news of safety; which has no defect in it; and when it was a dwelling that is only suitable for the purified; they said: 'You have been made good'; meaning: you are suitable for residing in it; so there is no turning away for you from it at all; then they caused to mention that - as a reminder that it is the abode of goodness; so none enters it except one who is suitable for it - their saying: 'So enter it'; thus resulting in: 'Abiding forever'; and perhaps the benefit of omitting the answer to 'if' is that the soul goes into it with all forms of honoring; and knows that description cannot encompass it; and among the most appropriate things is that their entry be without any barrier of a closed door; or the prevention of a doorkeeper; rather they are permitted; welcomed to the ownership of eternity.
