Commentary
And when they finished humiliating him by reproaching him, they tormented them with the command to enter. He expressed this in the passive form as an indication that they had reached the utmost level of humiliation, such that they obeyed the words of every speaker, whether great or small. It was said - in response to one who seemed to ask: what happened after this reprimand? -: "It was said"; meaning: to them; as a response to their words: "Enter the gates of Hell"; meaning: its terrifying layers for those who enter it. And when the news of eternity upon entry was more painful for them, they said: "Eternally"; meaning: estimating eternity "in it". And since the reason for their disbelief with the evidence was arrogance, the command to enter was caused by his saying - stripped of emphasis; because it is said in the Hereafter and there is no denial in it that necessitates emphasis; and there was no previous lie from them here, like that of the "bee"; rather, it was an acknowledgment and regret -: "So evil is the abode"; meaning: the dwelling; and the residence; "of the arrogant"; meaning: those whose arrogance necessitated the rights of the word of punishment upon them; therefore, they took the means to it.
