Tafsir for verse: 39:7
7If you disbelieve, then, Allah does not need you at all, however He does not like for His servants to be disbelievers; and if you are grateful, He will like it for you. No one will bear the burden of someone else. Then, to your Lord is your return; so He will tell you about what you used to do. He is aware of whatever lies in the hearts.

Commentary

And when the evidence became apparent; and the proofs dazzled; He clarified what is upon those who cover it with persistence; and what is for those who repented and returned with remembrance; so he said - resuming what is the result of what has passed; informing them of His favor upon them; that He was not worshipped for anything that pertains to Him from benefit; or harm; but rather it is for their own interests specifically; beginning with what is from repelling evils -: ﴿If you disbelieve﴾; meaning: you cover the evidence; so you persist in turning away from Him by associating partners; ﴿then indeed Allah﴾; because He encompasses the attributes of perfection; ﴿is free of need of you﴾; meaning: your disbelief does not harm Him; nor does your obedience benefit Him; as for you, you have no need for Him in any way; and there must be a judgment between you; so you do not harm except yourselves; ﴿and He is not pleased﴾; for you - thus was the original; by the evidence of what preceded it; and what followed it -; and He only made it apparent; to encompass; and to remind them of what they find within themselves that none of them would be pleased for his servants to have their dues paid to others without his permission; so He said: ﴿for His servants﴾; meaning: those whom He alone created; and nurtured; ﴿disbelief﴾; by turning to others; and you do not accept that for your servants; although your ownership of them is in utmost weakness; and the meaning of not being pleased is that He does not act like one who is pleased; by permitting it; and confirming it; or rewarding its doer; and praising him; rather He acts like one who is displeased; by forbidding it; and condemning it; and punishing its perpetrator; ﴿and if you are grateful﴾; meaning: by worship; and sincerity in it; ﴿He will be pleased with it﴾; meaning: the gratitude; indicated by His action; ﴿for you﴾; meaning: the pleasure that is appropriate for His majesty - glorified is He - by confirming you in it; or commanding you with it; and rewarding you for your action; and the two categories by His will; and the differences of the reciters in this are indicative of the ranks of gratitude - and Allah knows best -; so the connection is for those who reach the end; according to their differing ranks in reaching; and the snatching is for the intermediates; and the settling is for those in the first degree of it.

And when it was in the context of judgment and oppression; and it was the habit of the oppressors to assign some people to others; and to take them by their injustices; so that they may establish superiority over all; due to their lack of knowledge encompassing every opposition to their command; He made clear that He - glorified and exalted is He - is not like that; so He said: ﴿And no bearer of burdens will bear another's burden﴾; meaning: any bearer of burdens; ﴿and if a laden soul calls another to bear its load, nothing of it will be carried﴾; rather, the burden of every soul is upon it; it does not exceed it; it is preserved upon it for the duration of its existence in the abode of action; and the sin that is recorded against a person for neglecting the command of what is good; and forbidding what is wrong; is not the burden of another; rather, it is the burden of his own self; so the burden of the doer is upon the action; and the burden of the silent one is upon the neglect; for what is required of him from the command; and the prohibition; ﴿Then to your Lord﴾; meaning: solely to Him; not to anyone of those whom you associated with Him; ﴿will be your return﴾; meaning: with the resurrection after death; to the abode of recompense; and when the recompense is dependent on knowledge; He said - expressing it with this -: ﴿And He will inform you﴾; meaning: it will result from the resurrection that He will inform you with a great informing; ﴿of what you used to do﴾; meaning: of what was in your nature to act upon; whether you did it in action or not; then He will reward you for it if He wills.

And when the intended meaning - as indicated by 'was' - is the informing of all actions that occur by action; or by potential; the reasoning is well-founded with His saying: ﴿Indeed, He is Knowing﴾; meaning: possessing profound knowledge; ﴿of what is in the breasts﴾; meaning: of its owner; of the thoughts; and the intentions; and this is what the companionship indicated: everything that has not manifested outwardly; He is more knowledgeable of what has manifested.
