Commentary
And when he mentioned their establishment in life; which is the light of the body; he followed their establishment with the light of all existence; outwardly with physical light; and inwardly with the ruling on the path of justice; which is the light of apparent existence; and the inner reality; just as oppression is darkness; so he said: ﴿And the earth shone﴾; meaning: it illuminated with a great light; leaning towards redness; ﴿the earth﴾; meaning: which was created for their gathering; and he shifted the speech from the greatest name; to the attribute of benevolence; due to the predominance of mercy; especially on that day; for no one enters Paradise except by it; so he said: ﴿by the light of its Lord﴾; meaning: which He raised by benevolence towards it; by making it a place for justice; and virtue; there should be nothing in it other than that at all; and that light which is one thing by which a people sees without others; just as the blowing is sometimes for destruction; and sometimes for life.
And when knowledge is truly the light; and the Book is the foundation of knowledge; and that day has a greatness that surpasses description; and for that reason the disbelievers denied it; it came in what is to be in it by His permission in the passive form; in the manner of the speech of the able; indicating its insignificance; and that it is under His command; there is no burden upon Him in anything of that; and likewise what follows of actions; an increase in depicting the greatness of the day; by the greatness of the matter in it; so he said: ﴿And the Book was placed﴾; meaning: which was revealed to every nation to act by it.
And when the prophets are more general than the messengers; and the prophet is one who is sent to command what he has been commanded to command good; and he may be followed by whom Allah intends good for; and their number is one hundred thousand and twenty-four thousand; which is very few compared to all people; he expressed by them without the messengers; and by the gathering of the few; so he said: ﴿And the prophets were brought﴾; for the testimony against their nations by conveying; and when the least of the witnesses is double that of the accountable; he expressed by the gathering of the many; so he said: ﴿and the witnesses﴾; meaning: those who were entrusted with the accountable; so they witnessed their deeds; and they testified to them; and the foundations were established; and the claims were depicted; and the evidences were established according to them; from obedience; or disobedience; and the recompense occurred according to that; so justice appeared as a mercy for the disbelievers; and virtue became apparent as a mercy for the Muslims; ﴿And it was judged between them﴾; meaning: between the servants; who did all of that for their sake; and when the context is apparent in the generality of virtue; justice and virtue; as the indication will come to it; he said: ﴿with truth﴾; that the reality of the rewards; and the punishments; should correspond to what the news has occurred in the books; on the tongues of the messengers.
And when the intended meaning is the completeness of the truth; considering its generality; for all people; and deeds; and perhaps the possibility of a specific exception may arise; that is removed by his saying: ﴿and they﴾; meaning: inwardly; and outwardly ﴿are not wronged﴾; meaning: no injustice will occur to them at any time; so they will not be increased in the recompense of the evil deed beyond the like of it at all; nor will they be decreased in the recompense of the good deed from ten at all.
