And when these signs arose, as you see, like the standing of the banners, the darkness of ignorance was dispelled. The ignorant ones had called him ﷺ, as the interpreters have said in the beginning of Surah 'Sad', to stop concerning their deities. The acknowledgment of them was a form of worship for them. This led to his ﷺ command to them, by saying: ﴿Say﴾. And when the position of jealousy necessitates the removal of others, and when the jealousy is removed, all its attributes follow it. He presented the acted jealousy for 'I worship' as the acted upon, on the assumption of 'that' for 'you command'. So he said: ﴿Is it other than Allah﴾? That is, the Greatest King, who does not allow any corruption at all. And when the presentation of denial against their actions was more effective for them, and the delay of what preceded from the words for his denial was more eloquent, and the prolongation of the voice was more emphatic in the meaning of the words, and it was more frightening and terrifying, and more dreadful. He said - directing the words to them - because it was more effective in intimidating them and more severe in their depression: ﴿You command me﴾, with the merging, which necessitates the prolongation, in the reading of most of the reciters. And perhaps the merging indicates that they attempted him ﷺ regarding their deities, by way of deceit and trickery.
