And when he mentioned her state in acknowledging falsehood; then the rush to falsehood and slander; he followed it with the wish that is of no benefit except loss; so he said: ﴿Or will you say﴾; meaning: that soul that has been negligent; ﴿When it sees the punishment﴾; meaning: that which has attacked it for mercy; or for vengeance; ﴿If only﴾; meaning: oh, I wish ﴿I had another chance﴾; meaning: a return to the abode of action; so that I may be able to do it; ﴿Then I would be﴾; meaning: it would result from my returning to it that I would be; ﴿Among the doers of good﴾; meaning: those who act with goodness; which the Qur'an has called for; this grammatical analysis - and its conjunction with the response - is more in line with the rest of the verses that are of its kind.
