Commentary

And when He commanded to see all matters from Allah; and to submit all leadership to Him; He commanded what is higher than that; which is striving by killing the self; so He said: ﴿And follow﴾; meaning: treat your souls; and compel them to follow ﴿the best of what has been revealed﴾; reaching ﴿to you﴾; on the path of justice; like the goodness which is higher than pardon; which is above vengeance; by following this Qur'an; which is the best of what has been revealed from the Books of Allah; and by following the best in it; so that you connect with those who cut you off; and give to those who deprive you; and do good to those who wrong you; this is in relation to the creation; and the same applies in the worship of the Creator by being 'as if you see Him'; which is higher than the awareness of 'Indeed, He sees you'; which is higher than performing it while being heedless of that. And when this is difficult for the self; He encouraged it by saying - revealing the attribute of goodness in the place of concealment -: ﴿from your Lord﴾; meaning: the One who has always done good to you; while you confront Him with great sins; and when there are some souls that are like animals; they do not submit except by force; He said - also indicating the reason for His gentleness; by affirming the neighbor -: ﴿before the punishment comes to you﴾; meaning: due to your inability to defend against ﴿the punishment﴾; meaning: the matter that removes what is sweet and pleasant for you in this world; or in the Hereafter. And when taking by surprise is more difficult for the souls; He said: ﴿suddenly﴾; and when a person may feel something once; then forgets it and is surprised by it; He negated that by saying: ﴿and you do not perceive﴾; meaning: you have no awareness of its coming; neither at the time of its coming; nor before it; in any way; due to your extreme heedlessness; so that it becomes the most terrifying for the self; due to the severity of its opposition to what is established in it; and it is firmly settled against it.
