Commentary
And when the decree was: 'So refrain from your sins; for they are a barrier to goodness; distancing you from perfection;' he turned to him with a plea in his saying - indicating that the prior forgiveness is only if He wishes to bestow favor - glorified and exalted is He - with repentance; and without repentance -: ﴿And turn to﴾; meaning: return completely; and entrust all your needs; and rely on your affairs; and make your path ﴿to﴾; and he directed the speech to the attribute of benevolence; increasing in the plea; so he said: ﴿Your Lord﴾; meaning: the One from whom you have not seen any goodness except that it is from Him; ﴿And submit to Him﴾; meaning: establish the submission of all that He has granted you; from the tangible things; and meanings; disavowing them for His sake; for if He wished, He could take them away from you; so if you are not fully owning them, consider yourselves as being without them; not owning them; nor capable of them; and as if what you have by origin was not there.
And when that was severe; because refraining from what the soul has aspired to reach of it is extremely bitter; he said - threatening them; indicating with the letter of beginning to His pleasure with them by the occurrence of what He has confirmed in the short span of time; for no one can truly measure Allah as He deserves; by spending all time in obedience; and although the ambiguity of the term may encourage the wise to engage in it -: ﴿Before the punishment comes to you﴾; meaning: while you are humbled; ﴿The punishment﴾; meaning: the one that cuts off all sweetness; making you taste every bitterness and difficulty; and when a person may anticipate harm in his undertaking of what he finds pleasure in; and attempts to avert it; he said - magnifying this punishment; indicating with the tool of delay that it cannot be averted; even if the duration is long -: ﴿Then you will not be aided﴾; meaning: no kind of assistance will ever be renewed for you.
