۞ قُلۡ يَٰعِبَادِيَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسۡرَفُواْ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ لَا تَقۡنَطُواْ مِن رَّحۡمَةِ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغۡفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًاۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ ٥٣ ﴿53
53Say (on My behalf), “O servants of Mine who have acted recklessly against their own selves, do not despair of Allah’s mercy. Surely, Allah will forgive all sins. Surely, He is the One who is the Most-Forgiving, the Very-Merciful.

And when He warned - glorified and exalted is He - in this surah; especially in these verses; the warning was prolonged; and He included therein threats; and a clear declaration of great and numerous warnings; and He concluded with an encouragement towards faith; and a sound contemplation in knowledge; and the abundance of warning perhaps discouraged; and repelled; and made lonely; and prevented from turning back and distanced; He said (the Most High) - appealing; being gentle with those who have strayed from His door; being kind; combining between the words of those who have blessings; on the tongue of the Prophet of mercy; redirecting the speech to His address; after the style of the third person -: "Say"; meaning: O most honorable of creation; and most merciful to the servants; and He turned from what is necessitated by "Say"; from the third person to the meaning of direct address; increasing in appeal; and added in gentleness by mentioning servitude; and the addition to His pronoun; being free from glorification; so He said: "O"; meaning: your Lord, the Benefactor to you, says: O "My servants"; so He delighted them after those bitter experiences; with the sweetness of the addition to His presence; drawing near to His door; and when He added; the obedient ones hoped that they would be the intended ones; so they raised their heads; and the disobedient ones lowered their heads; and they said: Who are we that this saying should be directed towards us? So He (the Most High) - compensating for them - said: "Those who have exceeded"; meaning: who have gone beyond the limit in placing things in their improper places; until they have burdens upon themselves; "upon themselves"; so they distanced it from the divine presence; and plunged it into the satanic depths; thus the situation changed; so those who lowered their heads revived; and their humiliation was removed; and those who raised their heads were humbled; and their arrogance was removed; this was said by al-Qushayri; and he understood the restriction of excess that excess upon others is not forgiven; except by departing from the obligation of that other; "Do not despair"; meaning: let not your hope be cut off; and do not lose hope; and do not refrain; and He magnified the exhortation by diverting the speech from talking; and adding mercy to the greatest name; which encompasses all attributes of majesty and honor; so He said: "From the mercy of Allah"; meaning: the honor of the One encompassing all attributes of perfection; so that despair does not prevent you from repentance; which is the door of mercy; and for the greatness of the station, He added to the greatest name; then He justified that by saying - in a manner of emphasis; due to their assumption that the abundance of warning prevented forgiveness; and necessitated punishment by vengeance; and He repeated the greatest name; to magnify the situation; and to emphasize what is in it of the meaning of encompassing and gathering for the intention of generality -: "Indeed, Allah"; meaning: the One who encompasses all attributes of beauty; and majesty and honor; just as He is characterized by vengeance; He is characterized by pardon; and forgiveness; "forgives"; if He wills; "the sins"; and when the lam indicated comprehensiveness, He confirmed it; so He said: "all together"; and He does not mind; but He has previously stated that He only forgives polytheism with repentance from it; and as for other than it, He forgives it if He wills with repentance; and if He wills without repentance; and no one can prevent Him from anything of that.

And when it is not known among people like this; rather, if a king from the kings of this world wanted to pardon the people of crimes; his soldiers would rise against him; his bond would be loosened; and his limit would be broken. He explained this reason regarding himself; and he said - affirming the improbability of that; by comparing it to what they know -: "Indeed, He is"; meaning: alone; "the Most Forgiving"; meaning: the One who is proficient in forgiveness; such that He erases sins; however He wills; in essence and effect; so He does not punish; nor does He reproach; "the Most Merciful"; meaning: the One who bestows honor after forgiveness; and no one is able at all to object to Him; nor to direct any criticism towards Him.
