Commentary
So they were struck; meaning: a severe strike - as indicated by the mention of the action - meaning: it resulted from the lack of enrichment that it struck them; "the evils of what they earned"; meaning: the consequence of that; and what is harmful from its effects; "and those who wronged"; meaning: placed things in other than their proper places; "from these"; meaning: your people; those who do not reflect on the Qur'an; for if they had reflected on its verses, they would have known; but blindness had preceded them; "will strike them"; meaning: a very severe strike; with a promise that there is no changing of it; just as it struck those before them; "the evils of what they earned"; meaning: they acted with desire and joy; thinking that it is beneficial for them; "and they are not able to escape"; even if they thought that their wealth is a fortress for them; and they acted out of arrogance and pride in it; the actions of one who thinks that no calamity will befall him in this world; and that he will not be resurrected to what We have prepared for him of horrors in the Hereafter; and indeed that struck them; for the first thing that struck them was what time revealed of the incident of "Badr"; then what followed it to an endless extent.
