And when the disbelievers of Quraysh were specifically targeted by this with a great intent; even though it was general; by including others from the earlier and later ones; he said - clarifying that -: ﴿He has indeed said it﴾; meaning their saying: ﴿Indeed, I have been given it based on knowledge﴾ [Az-Zumar: 49] ﴿Those before them﴾; meaning: from those who were stronger than them in power; and greater in numbers; as Qarun said; and whoever was pleased with his state; so he wished for his wealth; ﴿So it did not avail them﴾; meaning: those who have passed; ﴿what they had﴾; by what their natures necessitated; ﴿they earn﴾; meaning: they renew their continuous earning; from wealth; and status; even if it filled the plain and the mountain;
