Commentary
And when the decree was: "So He will punish the wrongdoers; had they known that, they would not have thought by their claiming for Him - glorified and exalted is He - a child; and partners who bring them closer to Him by His majesty; and His purity from what they claimed for Him; and His perfection"; He added to it - to emphasize the matter - His saying: ﴿And if﴾; and the original was: "for them"; but He said - generalizing and linking to the description -: ﴿for those who have wronged﴾; meaning: they have fallen into wrongdoing; in something of the things; even if it is little; ﴿what is in the earth﴾; and when the matter is great; He confirmed that by His saying: ﴿all together﴾; and He increased in its greatness by His saying: ﴿and the like of it﴾; and He said: ﴿with it﴾; to make clear the whole instead of a part; not in a manner of separation; ﴿they would not have ransomed﴾; meaning: they would not have strived to seek to ransom; ﴿with it﴾; their souls; ﴿from the evil of the punishment﴾; and He clarified the time; to magnify it; and to increase its horror; He said: ﴿on the Day of Resurrection﴾; Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Anas - may Allah be pleased with him - that the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: "Allah - the Mighty and Majestic - will say to the least punished of the people of Hell: (If you had what is on the earth of anything, would you ransom yourself with it?) He will say: Yes; and He will say: (I wanted from you something less than this; while you were in the loins of Adam - peace be upon him -; that you do not associate anything with Me; but you insisted on associating with Me)."
His saying: "I wanted"; meaning: I acted with you regarding the matter as one who intends; and this is the meaning of His saying in another narration: (I asked you).
And when the decree was: "And if they had that; and they had ransomed with it; it would not have been accepted from them; nor would it have benefited them; because that time is the time of recompense; not the time of action; and today is the time of action; not the time of recompense; so if they had spent the least of anything in it, it would have been accepted from them"; He added to it from its original; not regarding its recompense; His saying - magnifying the matter by directing the saying to the greatest name -: ﴿and it appeared﴾; meaning: it appeared completely; ﴿for them﴾; on that day; ﴿from Allah﴾; meaning: the greatest King; and He made His matter terrifying by obscuring it; to be the opposite of: ﴿No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for the eyes﴾ [As-Sajda: 17] He said: ﴿what they were not﴾; according to their natures; and what they were created upon of negligence; and carelessness; ﴿they think﴾; meaning: it was not in their natures to intentionally think it; and their minds allowed them from the punishment; and what was like that was more difficult on the soul; and more astonishing for the heart;.
