Commentary
And when it became clear that their intercessors are not worthy of intercession; and that the entire matter is confined to Him; and that it is necessary to return to Him; which necessitates that all aspirations be directed towards Him; and that all determinations be directed to Him; and because there is no fear of anyone else; and no hope in anyone other than Him; He mentioned a state of their conditions; and said: "And when"; meaning: the condition we have mentioned; "it is mentioned"; and He repeated the greatest name; and did not conceal it; to glorify His matter; and to increase the ugliness of their condition; and said: "Allah"; meaning: the One who is not great other than Him; and there is no matter for anyone else; "alone"; meaning: without their intercessors of whom it has become clear that there is no intercession for them; "they recoiled"; meaning: they turned away in aversion; and in fear; and in arrogance; with their faces contorted; and their hearts constricted - this was the original state -; but He said: "the hearts of those who do not believe"; meaning: they do not renew their faith; "in the Hereafter"; clarifying that what drives them to that is the loss of the belief in what He concluded with in the verse; regarding the return to Him; which He completed; and made clear; the return of the Hereafter; "And when it is mentioned that those"; and He rebuked them for their satisfaction with the lesser; and said: "besides Him"; meaning: the idols; and He emphasized the extreme ignorance they have in their following of falsehood; and their stubbornness in it; without pausing to consider evidence; or hearing "it was said"; or "it was said"; by His saying: "when they rejoice"; meaning: with their inner selves overflowing onto their outward appearances; "they rejoice"; meaning: they suddenly seek joy; and its occurrence; and its renewal in a way that is steadfast in all of that; whether Allah is mentioned with them; or not; for the joy at that time is only with the partners; and the recoil and the joy are opposites; because recoil is the heart being filled with grief; and anger; so its effect appears; which is the contraction in the skin of the face; and joy is the heart being filled with happiness; until its effect appears; which is the expansion; and the radiance on the face; this was said by al-Zamakhshari; and the agent in "when"; the first is the agent in the suddenness; meaning: they suddenly seek joy at this mention; and He expressed it with the verb first; and with the nominal form second; to indicate their blame for the absolute recoil; even if it were in the least of conditions; and on the steadfastness of the joy; to condemn the absolute disbelief; then the steadfastness upon it; opening the door of repentance.
