Commentary
And when it was known by these proofs that He - glorified and exalted is He - is the One who manages the meanings; by His management of the hearts through guidance and misguidance; and the estimation was: So if you were to establish them with this interrogative denial, they would surely say: Yes. He then added to it the clarification that He is the Creator of the essence; just as He is the Owner of the meanings and attributes; so He said - refuting their religion; by their acknowledgment of two fundamentals; the complete power for Him; and the complete inability of their deities -: "And if you were to ask them"; meaning: if you were to say to whomever you wish from them; individually or collectively: "Who created the heavens?"; meaning: regarding what they have of vastness; and greatness; and height; "and the earth?"; regarding what it has of wonders; and in it of benefits; "they would surely say"; after frightening you with their partners who are among the creation of the One who sent you; by what you are in: the One who created it is "Allah"; meaning: alone; the One who has no equal; and there is no confusion in His matter; nor does shyness from contradiction prevent them from that; nor does fear of collapse from opposition. And when this was perplexing; because it is clear; and there must be that they do not accept; nor turn away; it was as if it was said: So what should I do? He said: "Say"; causing from their acknowledgment of Him - glorified and exalted is He - of all matters His saying - affirming the branch; after their acknowledgment of the origin; and warning them with fear from one who has no authority in binding; nor in loosening -: "Have you considered"; and when the questioner is sincere, he should alert the opponent to the point of the issue; so that he may awaken from his negligence; and return from his mistake; he expressed with the tool of what does not have understanding about their deities; after previously expressing it with the tool of rational males; clarifying their mistake; so he said - expressing the effect of "you saw"; the first; and the second is the interrogative sentence -: "What do you call upon?"; meaning: the invocation of worship; and he established their distance from the fear of them; by claiming their divinity with his saying: "Besides Allah"; meaning: the One who is the Possessor of glory and honor; so there is nothing except that it is besides Him; and under His domination; and when the well-being was more than the calamity; he referred to it with the tool of doubt; and alerted to His greater greatness - glorified is He - by repeating the greatest name; so he said: "If Allah intends for me"; meaning: the One whose command cannot be repelled; and when the repelling of evils is prioritized; he said: "with harm"; meaning: if I obey you in leaning towards it out of fear from it; and he emphasized in warning them; as a counsel for them; so that they may return from the apparent deviation; by what was mentioned of its lowliness; and its degradation by the feminine form; after its degradation by lack of reason; along with its lowliness; and after mocking them by expressing it with the tool of rational males; so he said: "Are they"; meaning: these idols that you worship; "able to remove"; meaning: from me; with acknowledgment of your belief that they have no creation; and that they are created for Allah (the Exalted); "harm"; meaning: that which has afflicted me; a type of removal; for me to hope for them in my time of distress; "or does He intend for me mercy"; for my obedience to Him in His oneness; and the removal of what is besides Him from His servants; "Are they able to withhold"; meaning: from me; "His mercy"; meaning: for my disobedience to them; a type of withholding; for me to obey you in fear of them; this is the reading of Abu Amr; with the nunation; and the employment of the active participle by the accusative of what follows it; and it is the original in the active participle; while the others are with the addition; and there is no benefit other than the alleviation; and it may be imagined from it that the idols are specific to this meaning known.
And when it was known that they would remain silent at this question; due to what they know of the necessity of contradiction if they answered with falsehood; and of the invalidity of their religion if they answered with the truth; and that the answer was certainly about this: "No"; whether they spoke or remained silent; it became clear that there is no one who has authority in any way except Allah; so the result was His saying: ﴿Say﴾; if you confront them with the truth; ﴿Allah is sufficient for me﴾; meaning: sufficient is ﴿Allah﴾; whom I have singled out for worship; because to Him belongs all command; from what they fear me with; and from other than it; ﴿Upon Him﴾; alone; because to Him belongs all perfection; ﴿In Him do the reliant place their trust﴾; meaning: those who want their matter to be elevated above all matters; and He commanded him with the saying; informing that their state at this question is a very apparent contradiction.
