Commentary
And when it was understood from His saying: ﴿And he denied the truth when it came to him﴾ [Az-Zumar: 32] that the polytheists deny him; it was from the nature of humanity to be concerned with such matters; especially if the denier is numerous and strong. It has been established that He - glorified and exalted is He - is the just judge between the disputants; and others; in this world; and the Hereafter; and it is obligatory for every listener to acknowledge the Hereafter; and He gave glad tidings to the doers of good and warned the wrongdoers. It is known that they warn him against their deities just as they warn him against his God; his saying is beautiful in every way - affirming the sufficiency of the utmost affirmation; and denying it with all denial -: ﴿Is not Allah﴾; meaning: the one who encompasses all attributes of greatness; described with the attributes of perfection from majesty and beauty; and He emphasized the intended meaning by the addition of the preposition; for what they have of certainty that they are victorious; so He said: ﴿Sufficient﴾; and He confirmed the basis by the addition in His saying: ﴿His servant﴾; meaning: the one who is exclusively for Him; who has not associated anything with Him at all; as was previously mentioned in the example; of those who denied him; and intended his harm; so He will support him against them; until He makes His religion prevail; and elevates His matter; and makes him independent of needing others; or inclining towards anyone else; believing that in his hand is something by which he is independent; and this does not contradict striving for the means; while believing that they are in the hand of Allah; for if He wills, He ties the causes to them; and if He wills, He makes them ineffective; rather, striving is more complete; because the arrangement of the causes is by the decree of the Wise; so striving to eliminate them contradicts the establishment of wisdom; and Hamzah; Al-Kisai; and Abu Ja'far read: 'His servants'; in the plural; meaning: the Messenger and his followers.
And when the answer is certainly: Yes; indeed, He suffices whom He wills; and the idols represented by the quarrelsome partners do not suffice those who follow them; He built upon that a strange state of their conditions; so He said - marveling at them; and mocking them: ﴿And they frighten you﴾; meaning: the worshippers of idols; they know that Allah suffices whom He wills; and that the idols do not suffice in any way; while they frighten you; and since fear is from one who has a choice; if he is rational, he is stronger in opposing them; and it is known intuitively that they have no choice; (p-510) let alone rationality; He said - mocking them; using expressions that are used to refer to rational males; because they place them in the status of rational beings in worship and otherwise; while acknowledging that they have no intellect; thus they became a source of laughter; and fame among the people -: ﴿Among those﴾; and He clarified their insignificance by saying: ﴿Besides Him﴾; and they are their deities; a deviation from the right path; so they say: We fear for you that our deities may harm you; as 'Aad said to Hud - blessings and peace be upon him -: 'We say nothing but that some of our deities may have afflicted you with harm'; and the expression about them will come in the feminine form; as an increase in their reprimand.
And when it was from the clear truth like the sun that what they said is not said by a rational person; and the intended meaning was: 'Indeed, Allah has misled them as a humiliation for them; and He has guided you as an honor for you'; He clarified that He - glorified and exalted is He - compelled them to that; so that His misguidance of them would be a sign just as His guidance for whom He has guided is a sign. So He said - alleviating from him ﷺ in causing him to have regrets over them; refuting the Qadariyyah -: 'And whom Allah misguides'; meaning: the One to Whom belongs all command, so His command cannot be rejected; 'then for him' - due to the fact that He is the One who has misled him; 'there is no guide'; meaning: so lessen your sorrow over them.
