Commentary

And when the wise person is one who prioritizes in every matter what is more important; he distinguishes between the better of the two good things and follows it; and the worse of the two evils and avoids it; the benefactor is one who places his greatest sins before his eyes; and works to eliminate them. Therefore, he explained the act of beneficence by saying: ﴿to expiate﴾; meaning: to cover with a great covering; as if he said: "...the benefactors who have done good for this purpose"; and it is permissible that the explanation is for the reward; and he expressed with the greatest name; directing attention away from the attribute of beneficence; indicating the great effort in action; and signaling that he cannot achieve forgiveness for one who intends except for absolute action; so he said: ﴿Allah﴾; meaning: the One whom the benefactor has set His majesty and beauty before his eyes; he immersed himself in His attributes seeking His pleasure; he worshipped Him as if he sees Him; and he confirmed by their acknowledgment of error and their intention for expiation; when their action concerned Him; by saying: ﴿the worst﴾; the action; ﴿which they did﴾; and they repented from it with remorse; and stopping; and the determination not to return; and it is known that when the greatest sin is erased, the lesser is also erased; because good deeds erase bad deeds; so may Allah bless the people of insight and sincerity; in public and in private; and when He informed of the purification from the burdens of sin; He followed it with the news of enlightenment by the lights of goodness; so He said: ﴿and He will reward them their due﴾ (p-508) meaning: the One who has favored them with the promise of it.

And when (the Exalted) increases the good deed; and nurtures it; He increased the reward in the recompense; informing that He makes all good deeds equal to the best of them; so He said: ﴿with better﴾; and when the aim of this surah is more specific than the aim of the Surah of "the Bee"; and "the one who"; and "who"; is less ambiguous than "what"; He said: ﴿the one who﴾; meaning: the deed that; it is like the first; from the addition of something to what is part of it; like a silver ring; and He indicated their perseverance in goodness; by expressing with the present tense; so He said: ﴿they were doing﴾; renewing it time after time; because it is in their nature; they are accustomed to engaging in it; so whoever was in this abode a benefactor at some time; worshipping Allah as if he sees Him; he will see Him in the Hereafter at all times; Al-Qushayri said; then it must be that the best of deeds has the best reward; and the best reward is the vision; so it must be continuous; and this is a strong argument.
