Commentary
And when He praised them for their piety, He said - in response to the one who asked about their reward; directing the words to the quality of benevolence; to inform of their increased honor -: "For them is what they desire"; meaning: their will is renewed whenever they wish it; "with their Lord"; meaning: the One who is benevolent to them; the One who is kind to them in this world and the Hereafter; because they submitted to Him in the first [life] what He willed; so He submitted to them in the Hereafter what they wish; and when this was the greatest reward, He praised it in a way that clarified its reason and necessitated its universality; He said: "That"; meaning: the great reward; "is the reward of the doers of good"; meaning: everyone who is characterized by benevolence; just as they were characterized by piety; so Allah loved him - glorified and exalted is He - just as He loved them; and his hearing by which he hears; and his sight by which he sees; and his hand by which he strikes; and his foot by which he walks.
