Commentary

And when it was known from this the utmost of obedience with the utmost of desire; and fear; and they know that he ﷺ is the strongest of them in heart; and the purest of them in mind; and the bravest of them in spirit; and the most truthful of them; and the most courageous of them in kinship and party; the fear of others is more deserving; thus, their threatening caused the greatest threat from him by saying: ﴿So worship﴾; meaning: you, O those who call upon him in times of distress; who turn away from him in times of ease; ﴿What you wish﴾; meaning: of inanimate things; or otherwise; and he alerted to the low status of everything in relation to Him - glorified and exalted is He - as a rebuke to whoever turns to others; by saying: ﴿Besides Him﴾; for indeed, the worship of what is besides Him leads to the severing of His kindness; and there is no kindness except His kindness; so if it is severed, all evil occurs; and in that is all loss.

And when they claimed intelligence; and did what no rational person would do; he commanded him to say to them what would alert them to their foolishness; by what they would come to in their misery; so he said: ﴿Say, indeed the losers﴾; meaning: those whose loss is the loss; for it is the end in ruin; ﴿Those who have lost themselves﴾; meaning: by entering the Fire; which is the source of destruction; for their worship of others besides Allah of all that necessitates tyranny; and when what is most dear to a person after himself is his family; whose honor is with them; he said: ﴿And their families﴾; meaning: because if they are like them; their condition in loss is like their condition; and no one among them can support his companion in any way; for each of them has a matter that suffices him; and if they are saved, there is no gathering among them.

And when the outcome is what is intended in itself; he said: ﴿On the Day of Resurrection﴾; for that day is the decisive one; there can be no recovery for what has passed in it at all; and when there is in that the utmost horror; he repeated the definition of their foolishness; as a reminder of their firmness in that description; in the manner of the result of what he understood from what preceded it; so he said - calling out; for it is more terrifying; exaggerating by the resumption; and the particle of alerting; and the pronoun of separation; and the definition of the news; and his description -: ﴿Indeed, that﴾; meaning: the great matter that is far in rank in loss indeed; ﴿It is﴾; meaning: alone; ﴿The loss﴾; he came with the form of 'al-fu'lan'; which implies absolute exaggeration; so how if it is built on the attachment; which is the heaviest of movements?! And he increased in rebuking them for their foolishness; by saying: ﴿The clear﴾.
