Commentary
And when He clarified what He commanded; and made it known that He fears disobedience to His command; He made it clear that he is complying with what he was commanded; He commanded him - glorified and exalted is He - to declare that; because there is a great merit in declaration that is not hidden; so He said: ﴿Say, 'Allah'﴾; meaning: the One who encompasses the attributes of perfection alone; ﴿I worship﴾; specifying Him with that; I do not direct my worship at all towards anyone else ever; ﴿sincerely for Him﴾; alone; ﴿is my religion﴾; meaning: in compliance with what I was commanded; so I do not tarnish it with any blemish at all; neither seeking Paradise; nor fearing Hellfire; for He has forgiven me what has passed; and what will come; so my worship has become for His sake; and because He is deserving of worship specifically; out of longing for Him; and love for Him; and shyness before Him; as for the desire for what is with Him - glorified and exalted is He - and the fear of His might, which is summed up in the cessation of kindness; which is, among the foolish, the least that is feared; my fear is only for the sake of giving the rank its due from the humility of servitude; and the honor of lordship.
