And when this response was a reason for him to submit and to turn in gratitude for it, and for him to transgress and rebel and to be disappointed, because it is a means of enabling evil, the listener eagerly sought to know what would result from these two causes. He made it known that he was prevented by abandonment from choosing goodness, by saying: ﴿He said, 'By Your might'﴾; meaning: that which refused to allow any action to be for others without that. And it is permissible that the باء (ba) is for swearing. ﴿I will surely mislead them﴾; meaning: the offspring of Adam - blessings and peace be upon him -; ﴿all of them﴾. Al-Qushayri said: And if he had known His might, he would not have sworn by it to oppose Him.
