Commentary
And when that was the case, the listener longed for what was from Him. So He informed - glorified and exalted is He - of it, in a clarifying context that He prevented him from guidance. He did not ask for relief, nor did he turn towards repentance. Rather, he was overtaken by abandonment through persistence in tyranny. So he sought what would increase him in curse, from misguidance and immersion in error, contrary to what He bestowed upon Adam - peace be upon him. He said, mentioning the attribute of benevolence and the reason for asking for respite, due to what had incited him against them from the apparent wording, that the curse is limited to the Day of Judgment: 'He said, My Lord,' meaning: O You who have been gracious to me by creating me and making me among the noble angels, 'So grant me respite,' meaning: because of what You have punished me with by expulsion, 'until the Day they are resurrected,' meaning: Adam and his offspring, whom You will resurrect with the resurrection of all creatures.
